National Adoption Awareness Month
Chapter 15
Every November, we take a step back to celebrate something truly special: the power of family and a sense of belonging. While it’s easy to get caught up in the moment— maybe your siblings “borrow” your things without asking, or your parents seem to always find something to lecture you about— National Adoption Awareness Month is all about embracing our familial bonds.
National Adoption Awareness Month isn’t just about celebrating families; it’s about building them, especially for those who don’t yet have one to call their own. Each year, this month casts a light on a specific theme. In 2024, the focus is on teenagers in foster care. This year’s theme, “Honouring Youth: Strengthening Pathways for Lasting Bonds,” asks us to turn our attention to teens in the foster care system and pay attention to the challenges they face.
Did you know that over 20% of children waiting to be adopted in the U.S. are teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17? These youth are often overlooked, as many people feel more comfortable adopting younger children. However, teenagers have just as much love to give and are longing for the security, guidance, and connection that only a family can provide.
So, how can you make a difference? Start with awareness. Share stories, spread resources, and support foster care initiatives in your community. You could try to contribute to organisations that work with foster youth, or even consider adoption if it’s right for you. Just taking one small step in supporting these children creates a larger movement to ensure every child feels seen and valued!
Family isn’t just about blood—it’s about the connections and unconditional love we hold for each other. And this November, we celebrate the power of our actions, and how they can tremendously influence someone else’s life <3
I urge you all to have empathy and support the youth in foster care. Every child deserves more than a house; they deserve a home!
