National Book Month
Chapter 10
There’s something magical about the rustle of pages being flipped, the smell of an old book, and the feeling of getting lost in a story. It is easy for us to get caught up in the business of life and forget to spend some time with ourselves. Many of us don’t prioritise hobbies such as reading, but this month, as we observe National Book Month, we should try to!
National Book Month is celebrated in October annually to promote the importance of reading. National Book Month began over 20 years ago in 2003, when it was founded by the National Book Foundation (NBF). The purpose behind this celebration is to draw attention and put focus on the vital role that books play in the lives of humans all over the world.
If you didn’t know already, reading is one of the best things you can do for your mental health. Reading has many benefits and can help improve your vocabulary, spelling, and even memory! If I haven’t convinced you yet, here are a few more reasons to give reading a chance:
Reading Provides Mental Stimulation: Just like our bodies, our brains also require some exercise! Studies show that reading can help our brains stay strong and healthy. It can slow down, or even prevent altogether, diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Reading Reduces Stress: I can personally say that this is true! Reading is an amazing way to relax, and it will help you bring down those stress levels. If you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed, take a well-deserved break with your book. It’ll distract you from those negative thoughts, and reading can transport you to a completely different world!
Reading Is Free Entertainment: If you ask me, reading is entertainment in one of the best forms! When you read a book, your mind can create images of characters and settings, meaning everyone interprets books differently. It makes it more personal and entertaining for you, and that kind of entertainment can keep you busy for hours!
Now, you may be wondering: How should I celebrate National Book Month? Well, to be honest, it’s pretty simple! Pick up your favourite book and find yourself some time to read. Go out and spend some time in the library, or maybe treat yourself to a new book! You could also post on social media using #NationalBookMonth.
If you tend to be extra and a bit more of a bookworm, there is even more you can do as well! You could create your own reading space, whether this be a fort or a small nook in your room. You could also plan a book-themed party or have a book marathon with your friends! I’ll be trying that one out.
As the warm temperatures start to leave us for the winter, it's the perfect time to put on some cosy slippers, have a cup of tea, and curl up in bed with a good book. Sounds heavenly, am I right? I’m currently reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. What will you be reading?
