Chapter 2

“Girl, you were faster than me,” an older girl stated who was in 6th form.
“I think she’s lost her spaceship,” a boy joked.

Then hundreds of people started crowding around me, trying to suck answers out of me. They started shoving me around, pushing me into the seats, spitting at me like I was a four-year-old and that they were big, bad bullies. Fire had been growing inside of me during this and it was ready to burst out, “GO AWAY!” The silence was deafening but I liked it too.

I looked around and there were no spare seats except one that was next to a girl who seemed to be in her own world, or her book might’ve just eaten her. It was obvious that she had no idea what was happening while I battled to have a bit of space. She wore round, gold glasses, and had short, hazel hair with a fringe that covered her eyes. Furthermore, she wore a white and blue striped jumpsuit and yellow converse shoes. “Do you mind if I sit here?” I questioned, dislocating my neck so she could see me. It took a while for her to notice that I was standing there, and after two minutes, I became very impatient and tapped her shoulder.

All of sudden, she turned her head and looked at me as if I just ripped the pages off of her favourite book. “Sorry, this book is just awfully hilarious. I think it’s trying to hypnotise me. First of all, why would Alice drink the poison for, like, Mazzie doesn’t even know there is poison, but the butler is- “
She was talking way too much, and I really wasn’t bothered to listen to her any longer. “So, can I sit here?”
“Yes, of course! Nobody ever sits next to me these days. Did you know you’re the first one to actually ask me? We should be friends, just look at how much we have in common. I bet you love reading too! What’s your favourite book?” I sat down while she was talking but it was so hard to not listen to her. “Oh, you like Harry Potter!” she said, as I turned around so my bag (that had many Harry Potter doodles on it) was facing her.
“Yep. My throat really hurts. Could we not talk?” I mumbled.
“Ok, sure! I’ll do anything for my best friend!” She stopped talking after that and carried on reading her book.

It was kind of boring after that, you know, since nobody would talk to me. Wait, maybe I spoke a bit too soon. A gang of girls walked up to me with tight Nike leggings and a black Nike t-shirt, along with some brand new, white trainers. I looked up at their blood-curdling smiles.

The girl in the middle looked down at me and said, “I heard you’re fast. Is that true?”
For a moment, I couldn’t speak. Three older girls were asking if I was fast! “Y-y-es,” I stumbled.
“Hmm, are you sure? A little girl like you able to run fast with those stick legs? Ha! As if.”
The girl sitting next to me was listening to our conversation, and she stopped reading immediately, “Hello! My name is Carly, nice to meet you!”
“Hi?” the girls replied. I kept turning my head to look at them as they spoke; what was Carly doing?

Carly stood up and threw her book on the floor, “Don’t you dare speak to my friend like that again!” With that, the three girls walked away, with not even the faintest expression on their face. I had so many things that I wanted to tell her but I just didn’t know where to start. In the end, no words came out because I just wasn’t able to speak to her for some reason. My face went so pale and I think she realised. “Are you ok?” she asked. “You look really pale. Wanna have some of my water?” However, I still couldn’t answer her so just shook my head. “Suit yourself.” I thought to myself: what is going on with me? I think I need to go to the hospital? How can I not speak to a girl that literally is the opposite of Miss Popular?

Man, this bus journey was actually getting in my head. I wondered if anyone else was going to come up to me and tell me to run as fast as I did before I came on the bus. As I was thinking that, someone did come up to me and asked me, “Are you really faster than Usain Bolt? Could you show us how long it takes to run from here to the end of the bus?”
I looked around; what was I supposed to say? “Umm, hehe. I really don’t think I’m that fast. Maybe another day.”
A boy with scruffy brown hair, and a white t-shirt, came up to me and said, “I’ll race you. Or are you too scared to?”
For some reason, he really heated me up. “When was I ever scared?” I smiled. Then we both looked at each other, ready to run. The noise around me blurred, and the only thing I was focusing on was the boy and the race.

We ran.

The wind flew past us and I had the same feeling again; I was flying. Technically, I wasn’t, but it sure did feel like it. After a few seconds, I realised he was right next to me. I tried to run faster, and I could see that he was trying to too, but nothing worked. We both reached the end of the bus at the same time. All of sudden, a girl shouted, “It’s a tie!” It was a tie. I was shocked, though. How? I’m like the fastest person in the world, and a random boy has the same speed as me?

“You’re fast,” I said.
“You too,” he replied, panting.
“Thanks.”
“Well, we’re both 15. What can we do?”
“15?” I asked. But he didn’t reply and walked away. What did he mean by 15? Yeah, we were both 15, but I didn’t know what he meant then. I stumbled back to my seat, confused. So, I wasn’t the fastest after all.

Everyone seemed to be doing their own thing: acting like nothing just happened. The boy disappeared. I sat back down, also trying to forget everything that just happened. “We all know something happened. You don’t have to pretend you didn’t just tie with a random boy,” Carly said.
“How did you know what I was thinking?”
“I didn’t.”
“Ok, well, umm. I’m not pretending. It’s just not possible!”
“Everything’s possible,” she sighed, and closed her book to sleep. Why is everything so weird? I asked myself.

Through the corner of my eye, they boy was sitting alone in the front seats. I wanted to talk to him but then I thought that that would be a bit awkward. However, I did it anyway. I needed answers.

I had all the steps in my head. Once I reached the seat, I put my bag down and sat down, staring at the ground so I couldn’t look at him in the eye. Even though I was desperate to talk to him, I waited and waited ‘till he would say something.

No words, he didn’t even look at me and I was tired of waiting. As soon as I was about to speak, he said, “What do you want?”
That’s when I knew it was the right time to look at him, “I-I. Want?”
“Yeah, you want something.”
“I don’t,” I lied. He shrugged and carried on listening to his music. I just said I didn’t want to ask him anything and that was a complete lie. “Ok, I do want to ask something!”
“Knew it. So?”
I wanted to ask him why he said, 15, but then the words just couldn’t come out so I ended up asking him, “What’s your name?”
“That’s it, my name? It’s Dylan. Yours?”
“Sarah. Nice to meet you,” I held my hand out so he could shake and he did so.

There was something about him that made me suspicious. Being fast? Saying ‘15’ randomly? Such a nice, fast person sitting alone? Something was going on. It was too late to ask anything else, anyway. The bus stopped, then there was my school.
