Lesson Six: Potions & the Moon Study Guide

Chapter 7

Polyjuice Potion & Veritaserum

Fluxweed is a major ingredient in the Polyjuice Potion. It must be harvested only during a Full Moon. Its oils coat itself as the Full Moon energizes its magical properties. During the other moon phases, fluxweed soaks up the oils in order for it to grow. If you harvest fluxweed during the other moon phases, its magic becomes weak & renders it ineffective to use. In order to brew Veritaserum, it must be activated during a Full Moon. It takes an entire month to brew since it must be exposed to all of the Moon’s phases. Due to it being odorless & colorless, it mirrors the gentle but powerful magical properties of the Moon.

Wolfsbane Potion

Due to the different Moon phases, it can mirror either more or less light, thus the amount of Moonlight can effect a werewolf’s transformation. By itself, the Sun cannot make a werewolf transform. The Moon & Sun makes a magical alteration in the body of a werewolf. During a Full Moon, Earth is between the Moon & Sun, & due to this, causes a reflection from the Sun on the Moon. Since magic is effected by gravity, magic gets deflected to Earth. Wolfsbane Potion must be brewed starting at the New Moon due to the Principle of Polarity.
