Lesson Three: Syzygies & Eclipses Study Guide

Chapter 4

Syzygy Types

If you look at Earth as a reference point, transits, eclipses, & occultations occur. When a smaller object is in front of a larger object, a transit syzygy happens. You will see the larger object behind the smaller object. From Earth, this syzygy would be between Earth, Io, & Jupiter. When a larger object is in front of a smaller object, an occultation syzygy happens. You will see only the larger object since the smaller object is hidden behind it. From Earth, this syzygy would be between Earth, the Moon, & Jupiter. When an object’s shadow is cast on either all or a part of another object, an eclipse occurs. You will see either a luminous part or total darkness.

Solar & Lunar Eclipses & Its Magic

Solar Eclipses happen when there are New Moons & Lunar Eclipses happen when there are Full Moons. This does not occur each time this phase happens. Lunar Eclipses happen only twice a year & Solar Eclipses happen two to five times a year. During Solar Eclipses, the Moon covers the Sun from view, blocking all but the Sun’s ring (the Corona). Partial & Annular Solar Eclipses occur as well. During Lunar Eclipses, it gives a red color hue that covers the Full Moon. Partial Lunar Eclipses can occur. During a Solar Eclipse, magic is weakened. Thus, spellcasting will be a daunting task when this occurs. During a Lunar Eclipse, magic is also weakened. Thus, spellcasting will also be difficult when this occurs. Due to these events taking less than an hour, most witches & wizards will not notice that magic is weakened, if at all.
