Lesson Two: Phases & Tides Study Guide

Chapter 3

Phases of the Moon

The Lunar cycle starts with the New Moon phase & ends with the Waning Crescent phase. The phases occur in a counterclockwise circle. The far side of the Moon mirrors less magic than the near side because the far side’s magic is different. The best time to view the Moon is the first quarter & last quarter. The best time to view other objects is the New Moon or any of the crescent moon phases. The worst time to view the sky is the Full Moon.

New Moon ⊱ Does not strengthen spells, creatures are active, experiment with spells & potions
Half Moon ⊱ Practice new spells, less likely to backfire
Full Moon ⊱ Water spells are strong, magic is stronger
Waxing Moon ⊱ Aids in connecting with the Inner Eye, potions & spells that aid in being strong or smart are stronger
Waning Moon ⊱ Boosts immune system, sleeping & stunning spells are easy to cast, likely to weaken opponents more

Tides

The tides cycle throughout thirty days of every month. The largest tidal range is in the Bay of Fundy in Canada. Spring tides are high & neap tides are low. Both tides happen within a twenty-four period every day. During the neap tides, both the Sun and the Moon pull the waters at ninety-degree angles. This tide occurs during the first & last quarter phase. The Moon links to elemental magic. In 1944, the Hurricane Conjuring Spell was created under the Hunter’s Blue Moon.

Fun Facts
The Moon orbits five degrees from Earth & has a consistent speed.
A lunar cycle lasts for thirty days (a month).
The Water-Making Spell, the Liquid-Parting Charm, the Whirlpool Charm, & the Fountain Charm are all strengthened by the Moon’s ties to elemental magic.
Water magic is the strongest under a Full Moon.
