Truth 1 - How it all began
Chapter 2
The seats are worn form years of use, the smell is old and dusty, and I feel like I want to throw up. My eldest brother Gideon comes up behind me and lifts me up and carries me to the carriage in which all of his friends and himself sit whilst on the express.
As we enter the carriage I notice that my sister Molly is seated next to Amos Diggory, a third year Hufflepuff. Why does she always have to go after the school's heartthrobs? She only just broke up with Kingsley Shacklebolt. I take a seat between Gideon and Amos.
Five minutes later my other brother Fabian saunters into the carriage; all the other girls sigh and I swear I saw some of them drool. Everyone says he is the cutest guy in Gryffindor, but I don't know what they are on about. He sits down next to Irma Pince and takes out of his backpack his brand new prefect badge.
Our parents were so proud when he got the letter saying he had been chosen as Gryffindor's male prefect. A congratulatory party was held at our house with all of our parent’s friends and colleagues at the ministry in attendance. The Minister himself was even there, he promised Fabian a position at the ministry when he is finished at Hogwarts.
Gideon has decided that he would eventually like to work at Gringotts. Molly wants to work at the ministry with our parents; yet has stated that she would like to end up being a stay-at-home-mother (something our mother approves of).
Back in the carriage I was asking many questions about both Hogwarts, the sorting hat ceremony and literally anything that popped into my head. Some questions I already knew the answer to; yet the excitement of finally going to Hogwarts had gotten the better of me.
After around half an hour of me asking questions Amos checks his watch; revealing we have twenty minutes until we arrive at Hogsmeade Station. The boys leave the carriage so us females can change into our Hogwarts uniform. My first year uniform used to belong to Molly, so is not as crisp and fresh-smelling as it would have been when she purchased it.
Once us girls have changed we leave the carriage so the boys can change. Not long after the whistle sounds signaling our arrival at Hogsmeade. We all collect our belongings and follow the procession of other students off of the Hogwarts Express.
When I step outside the fresh smelling air of the countryside hits my nostrils; however before I can fully comprehend my surroundings I hear someone yelling “First years! All first years come to me!” I look around to see where the noise is coming from; and see a tall, burly looking man with long brown fizzy hair and a beard of the same colour. “Go to that man standing over there. His name is Hagrid and will take all of your first-years to the boats” instructs Gideon. Just as I begin to walk away he adds “also if you are not sorted into Gryffindor, I, along with Mother and Father will disown you.”
After all the first-years have gathered around Hagrid, he begins to lead us in the direction of a windy path. As we all follow the path we pass a large lake with floating tiny boats upon it, with each appearing to only hold four people each. Hagrid separates us into groups of four, will us all climbing into the boats. “GO” Hagrid instructs the boats; no longer than a second after this the boats begin to move. Most of the girls scream from the surprise of the sudden movement; however, I must admit that I was one of them.
We turn a bend and see shining lights ahead of us. Everyone begins to ask “What is that?”, “Is that Hogwarts?” I, however, do not need to ask. I already know the answer. The lights shining ahead of me are that of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
We get off of the boats and are led past a big forest, which Hagrid describes to us as the “The Forbidden Forest. You can only go in there if you have a death wish or want to get expelled.” As we got closer to the castle I am able to see just how extravagant and beautiful it is. This castle does not compare to the description that my elder siblings have given me; it is so much better!
We head inside the castle and the Deputy Headmistress, Minerva McGonagall, gives us all a brief explanation on the procedure which will take place in a few moments time. “Inside the Great Hall is the whole student and teaching cohort of Hogwarts. You will line up at the front of the hall and wait until I call you name. Then you will walk forward, sit on the stool and I will place the sorting hat on top of your head. Once you have been sorted you will go and have a seat with your new house and enjoy the feast with them. After everyone has finished eating the Headmaster, Professor Albus Dumbledore, will give a quick speech and then dismiss you all to bed.”
I begin to feel nauseous at the knowledge that any second now I will walk through the doors of the Great Hall and to the start of the next seven years of my life. “Alright everyone lets go”.
The doors open and we proceed into the hall. All of the students, seated at their house tables, stare at us. I take a quick glance at my siblings, Molly gives me an encouraging smile whilst Fabian and Gideon both give me thumbs up. I get butterflies at the thought that I may not be placed into Gryffindor house.
We line up where Professor McGonagall told us to. I see that upon the stool is a mangy, old, dirty black hat. Professor McGonagall begins to call out names. I stand there, anxiously, waiting for the moment she calls out my name “Prewett, Dolores”. As I walk up to the stool I feel my legs beginning to wobble from my anxiety.
As the hat is placed on top of my head it begins to speak. “Oooh I could simply say Gryffindor but whether or not you are destined to be brave is the big question.” I glance at my siblings and they look just as nervous as I am. Some people in Slytherin house begin to laugh at me. It takes me a moment to realize that I have begun muttering to myself “please be Gryffindor, please Gryffindor”. I have no idea how long I was muttering this, however, the hat must have heard me. “Gryffindor by blood, but your mind screams Slytherin. You could achieve greatness in Slytherin.” Greatness? I don’t mind the sound of that. “Ahhh you seem to like the sound of greatness. You’ll be bigger, better and smarter than all of your siblings.” Did the hat just say better than my siblings? I would finally have the opportunity to show my parents that just because I am the youngest does not mean I am the dumbest. After I think about it for a few short seconds I start to whisper “please be Slytherin, please Slytherin NOT Gryffindor.” I continue to chant, slowly getting louder, in the hopes that the hat might hear me. It was not until the hat uttered a single word that I knew it had been listening to my chanting. This word was also what sealed my fate for the next seven years at Hogwarts… as a Slytherin.
