A potion is defined as a magical mixture that combines both magical and mundane ingredients. Today potions are brewed over a fire or another thermal energy (heat) source in a cauldron. The time it takes to brew a potion varies a lot, one potions could take about 20 minutes while another one takes more than 24 hours.
Only witches or wizards can ingest or apply a potion, muggles often have deadly reactions. When magical people and muggles still lived together witches and wizards would often give muggles potions with only mundane ingredients so the muggle didn’t feel treated any differently. Some muggles also sold fake potions to other muggles, these people were called ‘snake oil salesman’. The long separation from magic has caused what little tolerance Muggles had to potions to fade.
