The Goblet Fire

Chapter 10

"Tell me, have you thought about it Drake?" Hermione asked Malfoy as she looked at him with interest.

"I don't know, I don't really feel sure." Draco was playing with his wand that he had in his left hand. As he played it he moved his wrist and the sleeve of his shirt rose up showing the dark mark in full light. He quickly covered it with his hand but Hermione grabbed his wrist.

"With me you don't have to hide it. I know you didn't mean to hurt anyone." He moved his hand and smiled shyly as he placed a strand of Hermione's hair behind her ear.

"I know but... it's still something I regret having done. Still, thanks Mione." They left their common room together and went downstairs to have breakfast.

At breakfast Harry was talking to Ginny and Ron was talking to the Quidditch team. She arrived at her table and sat next to Seamus who seemed a bit restless.

"Hello Seamus, what's wrong?" She looked at him with a mix of strangeness and curiosity.

"Hello Hermione, it's nothing, just a silly dream."

"And would you like to tell me what you dreamed? Maybe I can help you." He let out a tired sigh and turned to look at Hermione.

"You see, I was in potions class three years ago with Snape. He was teaching me how to make a potion and I didn't understand it. After trying it, he told me that I was going to fail but at least I hadn't set the dungeons on fire." He thought for a moment- "Well, the positive side is that I didn't burn anything, but today I'm going to have potions. I think Slughorn is going to fail me."

"Nonsense, Seamus! He's not going to fail you. Just don't... burn anything."

"I haven't burned anything lately. Look." He pulled out his wand and began to recite an incantation. Then in the blink of an eye, the once snow-white napkin transformed into a flame and then into a lump of ashes.

"I'll go get... something to pick that up." Hermione stood up and walked over to Filch who told her he would go check. She wasn't very hungry so she decided to go check out the room where the Goblet of Fire was.

Draco had told her that he wanted to participate in the tournament but he didn't know if it was a good idea so he had consulted Hermione. She had told him that if he wanted to do it and if he felt ready to do it, he should put his name in the goblet but he should keep in mind that it wasn't going to be easy. Dumstrang and Beauxbatons had arrived the day before and some had already put their names in. She really didn't want anything bad to happen to him. They had become great friends, they were very close and, although she didn't want to accept it, she was falling in love with him.

When she arrived she saw two people inside the classroom. They were a Hufflepuff boy who reminded her a little of Cedric and surprisingly Draco Malfoy. He was putting a piece of paper in the goblet so Hermione didn't have to ask what it was to find out.

"So the answer to my question in the morning is yes?" She approached him.

"I thought about it a lot and I think I'm up to the challenge." He smiled at her and hugged her unexpectedly while he said in a low voice-"Thank you Mione"

They separated and she was stunned. She didn't know the reason for the hug and even less why he had thanked her.

"W-why do you thank me?" she asked him while feeling her cheeks turn crimson

"Because you didn't leave me and thanks to you I had the courage to put my name in."

She felt happy for Draco and seeing him smile again made her feel warm. She hadn't seen him this happy since four years ago.

The two of them left there together and went to the courtyard. They could skip classes as long as they studied on their own and didn't fail the year.

"I think I'll fail the year just to be here one more year" said Draco as he sat on the ground next to a tree and its leafy shade.

"I would never do it. No matter the reason I would never fail." She laughed and looked at the clear blue sky. Almost not a cloud passed through the sky at that time and today didn't seem like it was going to be an exception to that. - "You know, a few nights ago I dreamed about something strange."

He turned to look at her curiously while Hermione's gaze was lost in the sky.

"Tell me, what did you dream, Mione?"

"We were in the common room. I saw you reading the book I gave you but I was tired and fell asleep on your shoulder. The weird part was when you picked me up and carried me to my room. You left something on my nightstand and said something I didn't quite understand... I think you said... you know what? Forget it, it doesn't matter."

"Tell me what I said, I just want to know."

"Well," her voice didn't sound entirely convinced, "I heard 'goodnight Mione, I-I lo-love you' I think I heard wrong, you know." She couldn't look him in the eye but Draco knew it wasn't a dream.

"Y-yeah maybe y-you heard wrong. W-well the Goblet will decide the names in three weeks and Dumstrang arrived yesterday as did Beauxbatons. The school is more crowded than ever."

"That's true and yet the courtyard is empty" the two laughed and sat there talking.

The goblet had Draco's name inside it but what no one knew was that there was also Ron's name.
