Chapter 26
Welcome to the one and only Quotes chapter! Sara Rowan brings to you a detailed analysis of 5 carefully cherry-picked quotes. She hopes you love reading as much as she has loved etching them down onto the paper!
“Dobby never meant to kill. He only meant to maim, or seriously injure.” — DOBBY
I really like this quote because I imagine Dobby saying this with an innocent, slightly curious, expression. Raised by the Malfoys, Dobby was most likely taught by surroundings that to achieve a goal, you must do so by any means necessary. Of course, he still has a moral compass, so he wouldn’t actually kill someone, as he says here. But, he really just wanted to help Harry and he of course, took it far too extreme - as he assumed was the best way. It’s a great quote to show just how messed up the mindset of Dobby and other house elves (most probably) is, due to their slavery within the traditional pureblood houses of Magical Great Britain.
“Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all, those who live without love.” ― ALBUS DUMBLEDORE
Albus Dumbledore, speaker of truth…in this one statement. To be very honest, being dead is not the worst thing that can happen to you - it’s living and having a horrible life. As Dumbledore says, those who live without love truly do live without happiness. Love is what brings meaning to life, whether it be love to an object, love to a person or even love, perhaps, to an animal. Love truly brings light to life as though one has simply turned on the light in a most dismal, dismaying, and dark room.
"How wonderful, a Prefect! That's everyone in the family!"
"What are Fred and I, next door neighbours?" - MOLLY AND GEORGE WEASLEY
Molly Weasley was, at most times, an awful mother. I said what I said. She was unwittingly abusive by having many more children than necessary. If, for example, she had stopped having children after Fred and George, the Weasleys would probably have had a much more comfortable life. I’m not saying that Ron and Ginny should never have been born, but without them the Weasleys would likely be better off in terms of finances. Molly could never remember anything about Ron, whether it be his preferences for sandwiches or colours. Still, we’ll talk about this quote and how she completely failed to remember and actually care about Fred and George. Even though George said this as a joke, it’s completely true. Molly doesn’t care about Fred and George’s creativity and genius because it’s outside the academic norm and not what she specifically wants from her children. It’s a disgusting thing to do.
"What if after everything that I've been through, something's gone wrong inside me?" - HARRY POTTER
This is such a sad quote. The fact that Harry truly wonders whether something is wrong with him, whether his horrible experiences have hardened something in him, or genuinely messed up something in his brain; whether something actually has changed his emotional centre or his moral compass or the way that his brain works. I’m not a psychologist so I can’t explain this particularly well, but I did want to include this quote simply because it’s immensely heartbreaking.
“People change after a while, and they’re no longer who you once knew.” - NEWT SCAMANDER
After a fair few horrible personal incidents myself, I can confirm this statement by the very wise and caring Newt Scamander. I can’t relate to his exact dilemma, but I do understand the hopelessness behind it. If you think of a character in the Harry Potter universe, they most likely (though not always) have lost several family members and have suffered extreme sadness. In Newt’s case, it was all caused by a certain Gellert Grindelwald. And if we apply this quote to Albus Dumbledore and his best friend, we deduce that people do in fact change. Sometimes quite drastically…and then perhaps, you wonder, if you had ever really known them at all?
I hope you loved this chapter! Tune in next time to see the next issue and turn the page either forwards or backwards for deliciously delectable diction, a phrase which here means a collection of words that form sentences that form paragraphs and therefore create the next piece of entertainment to be greedily devoured by the eyes sitting in your head’s sockets.
