Hellen is Gone

Chapter 67

Charlotte

I desperately looked at my mother.

“Go!” Mother excused me from the bakery. I ran out the door into the woods after Charles. I followed snapped sticks and a coat that belonged to Charles. I followed the path until I reached the back of the shop where I’d gotten my wedding gown. I heard a street performer with a thick British accent. I walked out to the street to find Charles standing on a chair that he must have stolen from the shop. There was a small crowd of women and some men. Charles had the small book in his left hand and with his right, he was waving around.

I made my way to the front of the crowd. Charles made eye contact with me but continued to read Romeo and Juliet lines. I yanked his arm causing him to fall from his chair. A few people stared at me like I’d gone mad.

“Charlotte let me go!” Charles’s voice was weak, he had been crying. “Dang, you have some grip.”

“No! You need to help me find your sister!”

“Sarah’s at the mansion.”

“Your other sister!”

“I don’t have another sister.”

“We both know that you have a twin. And now we have to stop her from going to London!”

“Have fun. You aren’t going to find anyone, because I don’t have any other sisters. You know that.”

“SHUT UP, CHARLES! We both know full well that you have a sister that YOU forced to go to London! Now stop pushing away the problem! WE NEED TO FIND HELLEN!”

“Oh, now she has a name?” I let go of Charles’s arm.

“Charles! She is my friend! If you want to forget your own sister then fine! If forgetting mistakes were as easy as you make it seem, then I might as well forget you!” I walked off, not even looking behind me. I pushed myself into a run. I can’t lose a friend! I made it to the Turner mansion. I didn’t even knock, I just walked through the doors.

“HELLEN!” I screamed her name. Henry Page was sitting on a stool sipping tea with puffy eyes. I walked up to him forgetting the fact that he was a red coat. “Where is Hellen!” The man looked up at me. His eyes were red, he had been crying.

“Who’s Hellen?” He chuckled and took another sip. “I only know a Harriet.”

“You're useless! She’s your daughter you know it!” I started to give up all hope. I heard footsteps coming from the stairs. Henry and I both looked up in hopes of it being Hellen.

“She's not up here anymore.” It was Edmund's voice that spoke. I sat against a wall. I hadn't even noticed the tears of frustration that had been running down my face. I hugged my knees. I couldn’t help but let the sadness take over.

Hellen was gone.
