Chapter 59

Charlotte

I woke on the floor by the fireplace that was once filled with flames. It was very uncomfortable but when Clara had asked for the couch I wasn’t going to say no to our new guest. I stood up with a groan. I dusted off my dress and stretched my arms. I made my way out the door and towards Grammy’s mansion. The snow was only a few feet deep, but thanks to Grammy’s workers the snow was cleared and piled up at the end of the road. I pushed the door open and walked in. I stomped my boots and dusted my dress.

“Hello?” I walked towards the dining area. Grammy was sitting at the end chair. She was half asleep with her head resting on her hand. “Grammy?” The woman’s eyes shot open and looked around.

“AH!” She screamed. She looked around the room before meeting her eyes with mine. “Charlotte?! OH, DEAR GOD CHARLOTTE!” She started running towards me. She grabbed my shoulders and looked me dead in the eyes. “You're engaged right?” I just nodded. I was terrified. This woman was going insane. “Thank the gods! When you get married, NEVER, and I mean NEVER!! Have kids!” I just looked around trying to find someone to help her out.

“Mother! Leave this poor child alone!” I turned my head the elder still gripping my shoulders. I saw a woman that looked at least thirty-four years of age. She had a powdered face her cheeks were red with embarrassment. Grammy let go of my shoulders and ran behind a chair.

“MOTHER?! STRANGER! THERE'S A STRANGER RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU! MOTHER LOOK!” A young high-pitched voice screamed. I looked down to see a young chubby boy about the age of five or six with slicked-back hair parted down the middle. His vest had no buttons, but the thread was still there. They must have popped off.

“Sweetheart, it’s just Charlotte. She is your almost cousin remember?” The boy let go of his mother’s gown. He stuffed his hands into his pocket pulling out a bit of crushed muffin. He stuffed it into his mouth. His mother slapped his hand making him drop the crummy treat. She turned to me.

“Hello, Charlotte. This is my son Levi Turner. My Fiancé, Oliver Murphy is in our room upstairs. And I am Juliet Turner.” She gave a slight bow.

“Charlotte Jones. Pleased to meet you, Juliet, and Levi.”
