Finding Edmund
Chapter 53
Charlotte
It had been an eventful last few days. There were multiple blizzards, and it was hard to sleep with them. I mean, we were in the woods for a while. I was growing thankful for the pants. They were warm and held up well in the snow. It had been three days since I’d left New Haven. Alice was starting to be fun to be around. I mean, I hadn’t really seen myself becoming friends with my fiancé's cousin.
We had found a young man who was dropping milk off from door to door. Alice and I paid that man to take us to Kings, Rhode Island. It was a long journey, about a day or two, but the man was very grateful for the money that we paid him. Now all we had to do was find Edmund’s grandmother.
“Alice, where do we start?” I questioned. I turned to look for Alice, but she was already Knocking on a door asking if they knew of a boy called Edmund Turner. We knocked on over 13 houses before finding one that looked like a simple cottage. Alice was very excited about this house.
“The ugly ones are the most beautiful on the inside. My mother told me that one!” Alice said excitedly. She knocked on the door in a loud manner. The door opened to reveal a tired Edmund.
“Ally?! Charlotte?!” Edmund practically yelled. Alice jumped on Edmund hugging him like they hadn't seen each other in years. Well, they hadn’t...
“What are you guys doing here?!” Edmund said, being released from Alice’s grasp. I was surprisingly happy to see him as well. I gave him a hug. It took a while before I let go.
“So, Grammy is still alive!” Alice said in a happy tone.
“Well, obviously! She's asleep right now. Oh my god; you guys are so pale! Come inside!” Edmund gestured to a small room with a fireplace where a stack of books was piled. “Somebody explain to me what's going on please.”
“Charlotte?” Alice didn’t even know the story. It was up to me to fill them in.
“Okay—um. It’s a long story. Sarah decided to have the wedding sooner than necessary. I wasn’t prepared for marriage, so Hellen stepped in and tried to stop the wedding but instead, she just got rid of you. So, she told you a lie and said that your grandmother was sick and then she had... Ch—Charles act like you a—and she was going to have him m—marry me!” I felt a tear run down my face. I couldn’t tell if it was from the joy of meeting back with Edmund, if it was from sadness, or both. “I—I’m sorry. I’m making Hellen sound like the bad guy.”
“We came here from New Haven, Edmund. There were blizzards.”
“We can't go back. The storms are getting too strong.” Edmund said. I could see in his eyes the hatred I’d accidentally formed. I’m sorry Hellen.
