The Redcoats
Chapter 5
Charlotte
I was always one to freak out in troublesome situations, so I began to—well—freak out. I grabbed Rose’s arm and pulled her in front of my terrified body.
“Charlotte. I don’t think that they see us,” Rose said in a whispered and calm tone. A gunshot was fired and hit a tree right by Juniper’s head. “Okay! Now we run!” Rose grabbed my hand and I pulled Juniper into a run. We bolted. Only two of the redcoats followed us.
“Rose, wait! Juniper, don’t go back to your house; they can’t know where you live!” I yelled as we all ran. Rose, being the clumsy girl that she is, fell face-first into a pile of sticks. I grabbed her arm to help her up. Her dress ripped but she got up safely. We continued to run.
We were a long way into the forest.
“Charlotte they're gone! Can we go home now?! I ripped my dress!” Rose complained. “Yeah. Let’s get back to the bakery; it’s almost sundown.” I sighed and began to walk with the two girls.
We were almost at the bakery when I looked at all the houses. They didn’t look the way I remembered them. I walked inside the bakery to find everyone crying. “What happened!” I said as the two girls entered the bakery.
“The redcoats came, as far as I am aware, they raided every house for supplies.” My mother tried to explain.
“Then, how have we not been raided?” I asked looking around.
“We bribed them. With all that we had left.” My mother sounded heartbroken. I walked around the bakery. I entered the kitchen to find a red-haired girl about my age lying on the table with a gunshot wound in her arm. An older woman was tending to her wound.
“Delilah?!”
