Chapter 35

Charlotte

The next day I unwillingly went back to the Turner mansion. I arrived at around ten in the morning. Edmund gave me his normal bow and brought me back to the garden. The whole morning Edmund talked about how he arrived in America and some other chatter. Around noon we both went back inside due to rain. Rose was sitting in the dining room having a conversation with Lewis as I walked by.

“Charlotte?” I looked up at the sound of my name. “Are you even listening to me?” Edmund said staring at me.

“Yeah, don’t worry I am,” I said focusing my attention back on what he was saying. I ignored him every time someone from the Page family came into view. Edmund left to go run some errands with his school. So, I decided to explore the large house. So far, I'd only been in half of it. I walked down another hallway and made my way to a small door. I opened the door to reveal a staircase. I walked up the staircase, almost tripping a few times. There was one time when my foot fell through a stair. I reached the top of the staircase to find a large room completely empty. The room was full of cobwebs and dust.

I coughed as I breathed in the dust. I quickly left the dusty room and made my way back downstairs. Don’t trip! Don’t trip! Don’t trip! I fell face-first on the stairs slowly tumbling down. Not again! As I fell, I picked up speed. I felt bruises form on my arms as I used them to protect my head. I suddenly stopped, feeling a sharp pain in my head. I'm surprised I'm even still alive. I stood up dusting off my dress. My hair was out of place and looked as if I had been participating in the war. I opened the door and quickly ran back to the dining area.

“Charlotte?!” I heard Sarah’s voice say in shock. I looked up to see that the whole Page family was in the dining area eating a meal.

“Can one of you fix my hair? I fell down the stairs again.” I asked politely with a bow to my head.

“You might want someone to fix your face while you're at it,” Hellen said eating a big clump of food. Philip elbowed her roughly.

“You’re perfectly beautiful my Juliet,” Charles said waving his fork around dramatically.

“My goodness, Charlotte,” Sarah said looking back up at me. “I'll fix your hair, but I think we might need to send you up to the nursing wing…again.”

Sarah helped me get to the nursing wing and began on my hair.

“Is my face okay?” I said squishing my cheeks.

“Look for yourself,” Sarah said as she handed me a mirror. I looked at myself in the mirror. My eyes were glossed over as if I was going to cry. I looked down at my nose. It was bruised and bleeding and my lip had a small but deep cut on it.

“My face!” I squeaked. “This can't be happening to me! My face is too beautiful to die!”
