Chapter 29

Charlotte

Rose was spinning around in her dress humming different melodies, her hair in a half up half down with a hot pink ribbon that matched her dress hanging from the hairdo. Mother was doing my hair. I was wearing the peachy pink dress that Hellen had bought me. My hair was put up in the typical curled bun with twists of hair falling from it. My mother wanted everything to be perfect for this party. Delilah walked into the room wearing an emerald green dress with her hair in a bun just like mine.

“Hopefully Charles prefers redheads!” I laughed.

“I hope he does too,” Delilah agreed.

“Do you remember your lines, Delilah?”

“How could I forget!” I walked into the main room of our house with Delilah behind me. Delilah was mumbling her lines underneath her breath. The Turners walked into the house. Lewis and Rose ran off together and Edmund walked over to the snack bar.

About 10 minutes later, the Page family entered. Hellen walked up to me.

“Hello, Charlotte!” Hellen greeted me.

“Okay. That’s Charles,” I pointed to Charles as I spoke. “Remember your lines?”

“Yes, Charlotte, I do!” Delilah said with confidence.

“Is something going on?” Hellen asked visibly confused.

“Just watch. Okay, Delilah. Go!” I said. Hellen stood close to me as we watched Delilah work her magic. Delilah walked up to Charles and grabbed his hand dramatically.

“Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night,” Delilah said dramatically.

“Okay?” Charles said, confused.

“I heard you were the most handsome man but now that I have seen your beauty myself, I can confirm that you are much more than that.”

“Wait! Charlotte called me handsome?” Delilah just looked back at me. Her face was clearly saying “Help me!” Charles started dancing to himself. Delilah rushed over to me

“I'm sorry It didn’t work! I messed up my lines!” Delilah apologized.

“It’s okay. We’ll try again next time,” I said in a forgiving tone.

“I'm sorry, but why is this girl flirting with my brother?” Hellen interrupted.

“I hoped that if we got my best friend, Delilah, to get all dressed up and pretty,” I explained. “and if she would flirt with Charles, he would lay off me.”

“Oh, well, I think you made the matter worse,” Hellen said in a disapproving tone.

“I know,” Delilah added.
