Chapter 13

Charlotte

Once again, I was one to freak out in troublesome situations, so I freaked out. I quickly backed up and pulled my basket with me. I ran around the corner. Why did a girl call that evil man her Father? Why didn’t the kids run? Do they know that they are the bad guys? I took a deep breath and walked back to the crowded alleyway. Some of the men had left. I noticed that the wounded redhead's chest was rising and falling.

“Wait!” I walked up to the man that was holding him. “he's still breathing. I can try to help him,” I offered. I always hate to see people in need.

“Okay! I don’t know who he is, though.” The man plopped the wounded one on the ground next to me. I began to check him for a pulse. What else do I do?! I’ve only ever seen Mother attempt to heal one person, and that was our cat. I didn’t really know what to do so I took his vest and wrapped it tightly around the bullet wound to stop most of the bleeding. Wait, wait, wait. Red hair. Bright freckles. Tall man. I had a feeling that I knew this man. I poked his cheek to see if he would wake. His eyes didn’t open but he did snore.

“Sir?” I turned to the man who had helped me out. “Can you help me bring him home?” I lifted my basket and both his arms while the other man lifted his legs. Before we got even half of the way there my arms got tired, so the man just carried the red-head over his shoulder. We walked to the bakery and as soon as I got there, Mother was running out of the door ready to slap some men. Right behind her, Delilah was running out of the building. She quickly hugged me before looking at the men. She looked at the wounded man with shocked eyes.

“Father?!”
