Chapter 2: What The Hell Is A Gender?

Chapter 2

Yo, ok, let's start with what gender is exactly.

Gender: the state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones).

That's the dictionary definition. It's usually assigned to you at birth. But as society progresses, we're starting to see other things become more and more common.

Transgender: denoting or relating to a person whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender.

Transgender people are people who don't agree with what they were assigned at birth. They find that they feel more like the opposite gender, boy or girl. They try to look and sound like the gender they prefer. Which brings us to our next term.

Gender Dysphoria: the condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one's biological sex.

AKA not feeling comfortable in your own body. Trans boys bind their chests, or get top surgery. Trans girls wear makeup or shave their legs. Now, this isn't exactly true. A trans girl can still have male traits and feel TOTALLY COMFORTABLE that way, and it's ok! Trans boys too! You just have to respect that. If someone asks "oh hey, I prefer she/her pronouns please!" YOU should go "Oh ok! No prob!" not "But you're a boy, silly!"

Please. It just hurts.

Gender dysphoria also happens to our next group of people.

Nonbinary: not identifying with any 'normal' gender binaries

Nonbinary is largely an umbrella term. Some people do identify as just 'nonbinary' (like me!). Other people under the umbrella are agender people, genderfluid, genderqueer, or a bunch others!

MAGIC

Oh magic. You lovely, lovely thing. Magic is so lovely. It gives genderqueer folk a way to possibly make transition easier, and much cooler ways to be who they are. Hair color spells, spells that help with sweat, anti-anxiety spells for those who are having bad bouts of dysphoria or facing bad situations, ways to glamour or change your appearance to your will! Everything's still in the early stages, but it's growing!

There are so many gender identities. It's hard to categorize them all! This was just a super duper quick introduction to what gender is. We'll probably end up with more detail later on!
