Chapter 1
Asher sat at the edge of her bed, slumped, staring at pictures of her mother. In one of them, a grin was visible on her face while she threw her graduation cap in the air. In another, her back was facing the camera as she sat on a bench, watching the sunset. She stared at the floor of her room, hoping that maybe her figure would appear. "Asher! Get down here this instant!" The sound of her aunt's voice rose to her bedroom, and she could nothing but carry herself down to the living room.
Her aunt, Jaymee, was a thin and flexible woman with olive skin and extremely black shoulder-length hair. Asher, on the other hand, had dark skin and dark brown choppy short hair that was not as movable as her aunt's. She was lanky like her aunt, though, and shared her aunt's sea grey eyes.
Asher stared into her aunt's shimmering grey eyes. After moments, Jaymee exhaled. "You have... mail." She trudged toward the rather large pile of mail lying under the mail slot. Her thin, spider-like fingers swooped down to the floor and grabbed some mail. "Insurance... Bills... And--" Her eyes fell on one of the envelopes. As Asher stood quietly in front of Jaymee, she observed the envelope. It was ancient looking, and had some type of crest on it or something. Why would she need to worry? It was easy to search up 'Crest with four animals' on Google. It looked familiar. Where had she seen it? Her head began to hurt and everything around her was a blur and she couldn't understand what Jaymee was fervently screaming and then it kept repeat on and on on on on--
And then her head smashed against the wooden floor.
