Veritaserum, Little Scarlet Riding Hood and the Blood Moon

Chapter 4

Little Scarlet Riding Hood had brewed Veritaserum, all out of curiosity, not as part of her syllabus for any of the subjects at Hogwarts. She knew it was a type of mischief. She had to hide her Veritaserum from others or someone would know that she had tried to brew potions that had not yet been taught in class and tell the Potions Professor she had a crush on, Professor Draekon. Professor Draekon had deep eyes and an inaccessible, calm and strong aura that made him look like he had a strong sense of duty but could not be easily won over. These were the qualities that would often attract Little Scarlet Riding Hood as she was inexplicably drawn to the unattached, the inaccessible, the mysterious and the unknown, and for her the fear of the unknown was the lure of the unknown, though she was not sure Her Innocence would really like to spend time or attach herself with someone unattached, mysterious and inaccessible. Despite being brave, Her Innocence was also emotional and clingy, easily attached and deeply loving and kind. She was also sensitive and easily offended. But, Her Innocence too had a deeply mysterious attractive earthy quality to it, owing to her unbelievably innocent, shy and quiet nature, that everyone wanted to get to the bottom of, if not just to know and break the defenses of, then to measure and see if they could exploit and how easily they could do that and then to use and exploit. The sheer mystery of trying to find out exactly how easy it would be to exploit Her Innocence, was exactly the attractive mysterious quality of Her Innocence. Professor Draekon had had a ruffled background in his childhood. She knew that that could be a reason for someone with a pained past to go cold, especially when someone had yet to process and heal themselves from their trauma. And that was the most mysterious, most attractive and most wanted quality for Her Innocence, it was the perfect lure for Her Innocence to want somebody, she wanted the one that had gone cold, perhaps because she could relate on some level or perhaps for whatever other reason, Her Innocence was highly attracted to such individuals who were cold, mysterious, withdrawn, inaccessible and unattached. Professor Draekon was not only her very strict Potions Professor with strict rules to not try to brew other potions that have not been taught in class, but also her Gryffindor Head of House. She did not care, or she did, but she did not in the least want him to know that she had brewed Veritaserum, as she was afraid of losing house points and more importantly of losing or never earning his favor. But atleast that did not stop her from secretly brewing her Veritaserum as she believed that this much mischief was not only normal to everyone and quite understandable for everyone but also perfectly acceptable and rather required to be able to live life as a normal student. Therefore, she had brewed Veritaserum and she needed to take it out in the open to seek moonlight for maturation on the Full Moon. She could not leave the Veritaserum by a windowsill to absorb the moonlight as someone in the Hogwarts castle would definitely spot it and she would be caught and her mischief would be told to Professor Draekon, something that she did not particularly want to face, though something very small and deep inside her heart assured her that Professor Draekon would not care at all except for removing a few house points from her name for engaging in mischief on being prodded in particular. There would perhaps be no question of falling from favor, if he would barely care what she did outside of his class. She took her Veritaserum out of the Hogwarts castle on a moonlit Full Moon night, after curfew when everyone was asleep as she had quietly tiptoed out after everyone around her had supposedly fallen asleep and then walked straight to the cliff over the Black Lake as that was the spot she had most seen portrayed and mentioned in most Hogwarts adventures as the scene of action, once again the lure of mystery and adventure, though that was the thing she least wanted. She wanted to go back safely into the castle without anyone noticing and without harm, so that there would be no evidence with which to complain against her to Professor Draekon. She thought the spot was clear enough for her Veritaserum to mature. She placed the clearly labelled phial of Veritaserum in the very middle of the clear area, and checked and rechecked that it was recieving bright and direct full moonlight from the Full Moon. She had forgotten to check the Daily Prophet, as she barely got the time and opportunity to make it a daily habit, and did not know that it was the night of a Blood Moon, that is a total lunar eclipse, due to happen soon. As she was barely thinking about leaving the spot as she found it serene and peaceful, despite the multiple levels of danger she was aware she was in, her heart skipped a beat when she heard a howl in the distance. A long bone-chilling scary howl and then a roar. Her brain went into fight and flight mode and she was scared. She ran back towards the Hogwarts castle as fast as she could. The howl could not mean anything good. Halfway through her sprint, she looked up at the Full Moon, for protection, despite wondering why it was suddenly getting darker, and felt for her wand in her pocket, for protection. Then she saw the Moon and realised what it was, a red moon with a rosy colored reddish tinted hue and realised that it was the Blood Moon, that is a total lunar eclipse. That is why it was getting darker, and so she thought. She felt for her wand in her pocket and grabbed it hard as she knew that she would have to protect herself, as despite the Full Moon being highly magical and highly potent in it's magical abilities, it was also the same magic that aggravated many processes like lycanthropy and made them strong, causing with much more strength, the transformation of werewolves into their wolf-like form. She was terribly scared and utterly frightened now. However, the magic of the Full Moon was far less potent during the Blood Moon, and during this time, werewolves would be in their human form. She knew that the Blood Moon was her only chance to escape. She looked at the Blood Moon and prayed for its guardianship while she fled back towards the Hogwarts Castle. However, her curious little mind urged her to take one last look back at the open. As she did so, her eyes fell on a human silhouttee in the distance, facing the castle. She had heard a blood-curdling howl just sometime ago, and she wanted to protect or at least warn this human, whoever he/she was. Looking once more at the Blood Moon and praying for protection, she  tried to make some signs in the air, trying to catch the human's attention. The human either didn't notice or kept retreating towards the Forbidden Forest on purpose. Little Scarlet Riding Hood was perplexed. She tried to wave to him again. The human silhouttee refused to acknowledge her presence. Little Scarlet stood rooted to her spot, trying to make a decision. Should she return to the safety of the castle while the Blood Moon is still there, or should she go after the mysterious human and save him/her? Throughout all this confusion, she forgot to notice that she had spent a long time pondering. She barely noticed that the red Moon in the sky had begun to clear up and look like a normal Full Moon. Instead, she first noticed her blunder when she saw the mysterious human begin to change in appearance. The Full Moon was completely clear and began to exude magic as before. She thought the human looked larger in size. Realization dawned upon her. The human she wanted to save, was a werewolf himself. Little Scarlet Riding Hood ran and ran and tried to run faster but it was too late. She heard a howl and a louder roar closer behind her and her legs began to shake in fear. She realised she would have to fight. Her Gryffindor spirit kicked in. Little Scarlet Riding Hood drew her wand and reflexly turned as she heard the roar even closer right behind her, and found the werewolf standing just inches from her, his teeth sharp against the moonlight, nothing but pure aggression on his face and nothing-no consciousness, mercy or memory of his counterpart human nature, visible on the twisted and contorted features of his face. He looked like he was still seething in anger to release the seething pain that he had just felt during his transformation that he no longer had the brains or intelligence to know the reason of or the purpose behind and the science about. Little Scarlet Riding Hood was surprisingly no longer scared. She readied to face this monster and fight or die at the hands of it, for she recognized that when in the end in danger, she could either face it to the best of her capability or die. She gave herself up to the outcome and surrendered to the possibility of any outcome she could face, like a brave Gryffindor, and just tried to do what she could to try her best.
