My Handbook of Duelling

written by Hiya Debnath

This book was created by me as a handbook of duelling using information from all the lessons covered at Hogwarts in different subjects from the first year to the seventh year at Hogwarts along with my personal tips for duelling to guide others and me and help others and me in my duelling practice and in my duels in the wizarding world. You will not find the rules of engagement in this book, because I believe you already know it, but you will find a lot of basic and advanced information about and for duelling, that will be helpful and useful to you and me.

Dark Practices

Chapter 74

I do not recommend using these in any way. But you should just know what they are, in order to defend yourself or others from them if you or others happen to be the victim of them.

Necromancy: - These involve using the dead to carry out commands of the practiser. Two ways to carry out necromancy include using the Resurrection Stone and creating Inferi(singular form of this is Inferius) from dead people.

Rituals: - Rituals are a set of actions performed to bring out a certain influence, which do not require a wand but may require some sort of sacrifice.

Malevolent Rituals- These are dark rituals or rituals associated with the Dark Arts that cause harm. These corrupt the soul even more than the three unforgivable curses. These often require human sacrifice involving killing a human.

Blood Rituals- These are dark rituals involving the use of blood. Blood is a very powerful substance and "blood magic" is often very powerful. These may often require self-harm or harming others.

Other than these, there was something I neglected to mention in this book earlier, when I was discussing spells. This is because it is about spells that are quite in resemblance to a ritual. They are long-standing spells, that is spells which have a prolonged effect after the initial cast, which is why they are categorized among dynamic spells, though they do not require continued willpower and concentration after the initial cast. They are not necessarily dark. They are a very ancient form of magic which did not require specific preformed wand movements and the short precise preformed incantations that we use today. They were often tied to a certain object to keep the effect going for a long time. They were often casted using a long rhyming combination of words which made a few phrases or a few short sentences, mentioning the desired long-lasting effect of the spell, and the desired target. The long rhyming combination of words or phrases was often composed by the caster themselves. However, it required proper mention of the desired target and the desired long-lasting effect of the spell, otherwise the spell would not work or have an unwanted effect. These spells could only be removed by a similar rhyming counter-spell which was another long rhyming combination of words that exactly mentioned the desired reversal or modification of the initial effect and the target. For this, either the initial caster would have to be found and requested to remove the spell or the incantation would have to be found out. An Effect-Cancelling Charm could not reverse these spells. Thus, as can be made out, these spells were rigid in their own way but at the same time flexible in their own way. One example of such spells is the familial curse, which was a broad category of spells which could cause a certain effect on an entire family including the branches in it's entire family tree, one type of which aimed at making a certain family with all the branches of it's family tree, barren that is unable to produce children, thus ending their bloodline. Anyone linked to the family tree for many generations would be affected by the curse. It would take atleast eight to nine generations of separation between the generation the spell was cast on and the generation an individual belongs to, for the individual to not be affected by the spell.
