The Marauder's Map
Chapter 2
"Lumos, Wands Alight! Guys, are you ready? I am excited, Hiya says as Lacey and Rose join in, gathering around their favorite table in their little cozy library corner. Rose has magical sweets for everyone as usual, to munch on while they plan for their quest to get the Marauders Map. "So, we need to acquire the Marauders Map", Hiya says. "How do y’all plan to get to it, I mean what do you think is the best way to get to it. I can suggest a few possibilities:
1. We could steal it (from Harry Potter?), though I don’t know how, maybe we could find out where Harry Potter lives now and befriend his son and use his son's friendship to sneak into his house and get to the map. But that will probably get us into big trouble as Harry Potter has his friends working in the Ministry and it's not exciting to steal.
2. Or maybe Harry Potter no longer has it, which is a seco and possibility, in that case we will have to find it. Now, going out to find the Marauders Map is something I am surely willing to do, provided y'all agree to help me. But there will be some pitfalls ,for example, dodging the curfew at night and sneaking out of Hogwarts castle to look for the map in the whole wide world, without knowing where to find (no one said we cannot research on leads though) while simultaneously coming back on time to attend classes, the most that can happen is we could end up with detention, or WORSE EXPELLED.
3. Or we could make it, even trying to perform the Homounculus charm which is supposed to have been used to make the map by the four original Marauders, can be dangerous, as it is very advanced magic, as we are first years, and barely know our own wands. We may be good and are excellent in studies and in class, but it’s not like we know magic like the back of our 'wands', pun intended. But we can try, with some difficulty. And we will have it to put a protection charm on it like a 'Snape repelling Spell' but in our case, a 'Anyone Repelling Spell', or at least an 'Adult Repelling Spell' or a 'Professor Repelling Spell', and a defense of its own as well, such as a password like 'I solemnly swear I am up to no good' but not exactly this one, because everyone already knows this and will thus steal our map. Personally, I find this one the most challenging, as we will have to research and find out a lot about these advanced charms and spells and find out how such advanced magic works, because we are not kids playing here, and do not want to cause accidents by using the wrong spells, we could end up with fractures, burns or fires, death, or even a dragon load of other magical injuries, or WORSE EXPELLED. But I am going to love it, as I am a Gryffindor.
Which one do you guys think is the best plan?
So guys, Lacey, please use your Slytherin ambition and cunningness, and Rose, please use your Ravenclaw wit, wisdom and knowledge to help us on this quest.
I am sure Rose will always have the best advice and knowledgeable leads, Lacey will always know how to use the most ambitious and cunningness to put our plan in action, and I, my friends, am here to die for you!"
At the end of her long speech, Hiya relaxes and calms down to bite on a cauldron cake and a chocolate frog while waiting for Lacey and Rose's reactions.
"I love all these ideas that Hiya gave. But the job is up to us to create our own Marauders' Map. So, we will do whatever it takes to make one. The first thing we need to do is make a list of tasks that we need to perform, to make a map. First, we need to gather supplies and research more about the Marauders and their mischiefs. Second, we need to learn all the advanced spells to make the exact map that the original Marauders made. So, the first thing is getting ourselves organized. Today, let's focus on that", Rose says.
"Thats brilliant, so you choose to make a map of our own, Rose.”
Hiya says, and adds, “Of course, that’s what I would have expected from a Ravenclaw. A true Ravenclaw never shies away from the opportunity of gathering more knowledge and using advanced magic, Lacey, do you agree?” Lacey silently nods and the three of them put their heads together, with a parchment in the middle of the table, and quills at the ready. “Talking about the Marauders, they only used the map in the castle, which means they discovered all the secret passages and corridors at Hogwarts. But if you have read the life history of Harry Potter (sorry for being a know it all like Hermione Granger here), Harry used the map during the search for the Horcruxes outside the Hogwarts castle, to spy on Ginny, which means that the map works anywhere in the world, not just in Hogwarts, hence we have evidence to say that it was not just a map of Hogwarts, but a map of any place possible in the world. That means that it's not about just mapping all the places with our knowledge of geography, because I am sure even the Marauders didn’t know every place in the whole world as it is impossible, but it is about charming the map to somehow kind of magically reveal all the places in the world. I would suggest that it would require some kind of revealing charm. Once that is done, we need to somehow magically charm it into revealing the humans walking around the place, which probably, as I would guess, is the work of the Homounculus charm. And then, we will have to think about a Shrinking Charm as well because imagine fitting the whole world into a piece of parchment, and we don’t have muggle cartographers here to plot long distances into short using scales, but we don’t want to do that tedious work either, we need to do that by magic, like a world map that doesn’t actually look like a world map but magically grows and/or shrinks depending on the place you are in and the place you want to see, so that would involve an expanding charm as well, to do the opposite of the shrinking charm when needed. Next, we need the protection spells, let’s do an ‘Adult Repelling Spell’ for now, we could do something like a’ Stay out of Trouble spell' but I think that will be too complicated, so let’s just start with the ‘Adult Repelling spell'. So, like Rose says, today we need to do some organizing and listing. Let’s make a list of the spells we need:
- All locations in the whole world Revealing Charm
2. The Homounculus charm
3. A Shrinking Charm
4. An Expanding Charm
5. An Adult Repelling Spell.
We also always need our wands, parchments, quills, inkpots, and a Remembrall, if possible, and Rose's supply of magical candies.
Then we need to research each of these five spells one by one and find out if they exist or how they can be done. Then we will have to try to cast them.
Also, the closest thing I can think about other than the original Marauders Map is a Muggle world map, and we should keep one with us, though I still don’t know how we will be using it". "Also, guys I am kind of overwhelmed, and I think we need more help. Rose and I approached Dibyarup James Potter today, and he claims to be Harry Potter's son, but his father wouldn’t let us borrow the map of course, because Dibyarup says his dad is protective of it, but Dibyarup may have some interesting knowledge about the map though, like some interesting facts we didn’t know, as he has seen his father use it from close quarters. We have to cancel on stealing or borrowing the map because Dibyarup already knows we are interested, but we can invite Dibyarup to join us, and if he agrees to borrow the map from his father for a day, we can also maybe use Priori Incantatem somehow on the map to find out what charms were used on it. Also, please remember, if Dibyarup is truly Harry Potter’s son, then he is a celebrity and we will need to treat him with respect, so Lacey if you could guard our table for a minute, I and Rose can go find Dibyarup and ask if he will help us", Hiya says.
"Definitely Hiya. We will respect and care for him. Also let's do one thing. I'll go and research the advanced spells one by one. Hiya can go and talk to Dibyarup more about the map. Then you can join me, Hiya. Okay, see you after some time." Saying this, Rose leaves for the 'Advanced Spell' section and Hiya leaves to talk with Dibyarup. Then after some researching, Rose finds a book called 'Advanced Magic for Higher Studies'. This boo’k contains all the information that they need to make the Marauder's Map. "Hey Hiya, See, I found the perfect book we need to make the map. I investigated the book and found that all the spells that we need to make the map.” Rose adds.
"Really? Did you? Let’s get to work then”, Hiya says excited, adding with a sad face for a passing moment, “Dibyarup was supposed to meet me here, he never came to meet me, I was expecting this to happen though, being Harry Potter's son and we being after the map, he must have thought we will kidnap him or freeze him with Petrificus Totalus and will blackmail his father to give us the map. Anyway, we will have to continue on our own. Also, Lacey said she opts out because she is too busy trying to get into the Quidditch team in first year itself, flying around for tryouts, so I guess we will have to leave her out then, as well (that disappoints Rose a little too). Now it’s just you and me, it’s okay. We will make quite a team. Since we can’t research the original Marauder’s map from Dibyarup Potter, we will have to deal with experimentation and see if we can get a Marauders map from those advanced spells.”
Rose says, “I am excited too. But Hiya, please slow down. They are definitely the spells we need or something like them, however, it can be dangerous. Let’s gather some protection and supplies first, maybe essence of Dittany, a decision on which Hogwarts teacher we can approach in case of a magical accident, and also how to reverse charms (though I don’t think that’s possible). Maybe we should keep an ear out or ear extended for our Charms Professor Cassandra Virneburg to help us in case of a magical emergency.”
Hiya pays heed to Rose's Ravenclaw words of caution and adds, “Let’s keep an eye out for Professor Draekon as well, he maybe a Potions Professor but I am sure he knows a lot of advanced magic.”
Rose giggles and pulls out a bottle of essence of Dittany from her robe.
“Rose, where did you get that?” Hiya asks.
Rose replies, “I stole it, from the shelves of the Herbology class. I figured we may need it, because we are supposed to deal with some really advanced magic, and that can be dangerous, especially since we are first years.
Hiya looks at Rose, intrigued and says, “A true Ravenclaw.”
Rose adds, “Maybe we could call our DADA professor too, because, he has been an auror, and I am sure he will know how to heal some magical injuries or deal with magical emergencies and problems.”
Hiya says, ”You are correct, but I am also a little scared of it, because our DADA professor seems a little strict to me and he is an ex-Auror and thus, I am scared of what he may do to us after he comes to know we have been doing such kind of magic and engaging in such mischief.”
Rose nods in agreement adding with a shrug, “But we will have to risk it.”
The pair of them sit at the library table, at first scanning, their surroundings for prying eyes or extendable ears, and then excitedly flipping through the pages of the book Rose had found.
They look through the book for any spell that comes close to mapping or the world and Hiya makes an observation and says, “All these spells seem to be the Latin of what purpose they are trying to achieve, for example, Expecto Patronum in Latin means 'I expect a patron' which means referring to the magical animal or whatever is conjured to be the patron or guard for the witch or wizard against the dementors. So, let’s look for the Latin of something like map or world or everywhere or like 'map everything' for us. Rose says, “I think I found something like that, the charm reads Mappa Omniamundus (pronunciation and incantation to be done as Map-pah Omnee-ah-mahn-dahs)."
"Cool, lets read up on it. Hiya says. “The text says the charm was first used and invented by some ancient cartographers who were living in the Muggle world, mapping locations and found the job to be tedious.”
Rose observes and says, “’The charm dates back to the time of the ancient Babylonians, to 1894 BCE’, no wonder the book is so old with yellowish musty smelling pages, and tattered.”
Hiya adds, “Yeah right, this book is a find. You have done a great job, Rose. Why does Hogwarts not teach such a spell though? I have not heard about it before.”
Rose says, “Maybe they think it’s not necessary or we don’t need it because so many muggle maps and their copies are available today to wizards. Maybe nowadays they just make copies of maps instead of trying to discover, find and map more actual locations or maybe they just rely on Muggle satellites (learned that in Muggle Studies) to do that instead. Maybe when the world was ancient, and much of it was not known to the people, and people still had a lot of exploring and discovering to do, this charm may have come in handy to witches and wizards to map the world without much travelling and exploring and effort and maybe that’s why in muggle stories of that time or in muggle fairytales, princes and/or knights were known to be guided by witches and wizards or other magical beings about where and how to find the princess or the dragon's cave or the treasure, as the map of the world was more well plotted by the wizarding world than the muggles, and also explains how the princesses were always pointed by some magical beings towards which direction to go to reach their destination and how the place looks like, and many other similar plots in such stories.”
“Brilliant, you sound brilliant right now, Rose”, Hiya says, “You were quite brilliant to deduce that, but let’s now try to cast the charm. The wand movement appears to be a simple, an 'O' from the book, but it is not mentioned in which direction. Maybe they purposely hid it and we should try an 'Aparecium' or 'Revelio' charm to reveal it.”
“You are right”, Rose says and casts both spells, but nothing happens. “Okay it seems they really didn’t mention it. We will have to take a guess. Let’s start with the clockwise direction. Who goes first?”
“I will go first” ,Hiya says, always being the brave and a daring Gryffindor protecting her friends from danger, Rose looks suspiciously at her enthusiasm, and Hiya explains, “I have been practicing first years charms all day long and then a few more higher year spells yesterday, solely for this purpose, so that I could cast a charm when needed, during our quest”. She picks up her wand, points it at a parchment and says Map-pah-Omnee-ah-mahn-dahs the best she can, waving it in an 'O' in a clockwise direction. A map of the world appears on the parchment but it is upside down.
Hiya had shut her eyes after casting the charm, worried what will be the result.
“Hahaha, it’s the correct spell alright, but its upside down, or let’s say the reverse”, Rose says and laughs.
Hiya opens her eyes and says, “Is it? I was expecting the worst.”
Rose says, “I think you should have waved the wand in an 'O' in the anticlockwise direction, that should fix the map, because that’s the only two ways an 'O' goes.”
“Ahh, only a true Ravenclaw like you can have thought of that”, Hiya says, clearly impressed, and Rose says, “Okay, it’s my turn now” and she picks up her wand, points it at a fresh piece of parchment and casts the same spell, waving her wand in an 'O' in the anticlockwise direction, and voila, there’s a world map on the parchment, right way round and looking perfect, complete with a scale on the bottom.
“That worked”, Hiya says and shouts excitedly. Hiya gives Rose a pat on her back, and Rose says, “We have done it”, and they hug each other in excitement.
They want to cheer more but suddenly realize they can’t because that will attract prying eyes and extendable ears and the notice and attention of other students in the library. So, they keep quiet and begin to note down the charm and their discoveries and observations, and the information on the charm from the book, on another piece of parchment, to keep it safe with them. Hiya uses the doubling charm, Geminio to copy the parchment and they each keep one copy with themselves in their pocket.
“Hiya, now we need protection and repulsion charms. Let's search the book for more." Saying this, Rose turns through the pages of the very old book. And tada! She finds it. "Hey, Hiya. I've found it. The spell is called the Disguising Charm. The incantation is 'Dissimulare'. The incantation is "dis-see-MOO-lah-re. The wand movement is an anti-clockwise loop with a flick at the end." Hiya jumps with joy. Rose asks her to contain her excitement. Rose and Hiya both cast the spell on their copies and it works. They now have to figure a password.
"Brilliant work Rose, you've got a really huge job done, Hiya says barely unable to contain her excitement. We've now got a parchment that looks like an empty piece of parchment with no writing and neither Aparecium nor Revelio works on it. Now for the password, because I believe the first time the original spellcaster taps the parchment with a wand and utters the password, which may be anything, the object remembers it as the password next time. And only opens with that password. So, what password do we use, and do we use the same password?
Rose suggests using the same password as then we can use each other’s disguised maps, but, others can’t.
Hiya agrees and writes down a list of passwords she thinks they could use.
“1. This is the only mischief I am up to (this is something only we know about us but, can also be very generic and similar to the original Marauders Map password, someone may figure it out).
2. 'We made it', or, 'We did it', (but then people can guess that too, very easily).
3.Maybe, it should contain something from our names such as rose and Hiya, like 'Say Hi to the rose plant'. But if we have to share the password with someone else in any case, it will be very embarrassing.
4. 'I swear every rose and map has a thorn’ (it has your name and is difficult to guess, but not exciting).
5. 'I solemnly swear we were only playing' (this sounds good).
I am out of ideas, and confused. Rose, help me on this one, you choose.”
“Lets sleep on it and figure out our password tonight.” “We did a great job, for today. Let’s go back to the common room to have some rest. We can do the rest of the magic later, and we still have to do the most dangerous Homounculus charm at the last.”
With that, they return the book to the advanced section of the library and head back to their dorms to think about a password and sleep and meet again next evening with a password in mind.
"Hey even though all the passwords which you gave are amazing, we need something that no one has heard of. And also, I would like you to meet Bea. She will be continuing this quest to make the map. She is a very friendly ally. She, too, is a Gryffindor.”
“The password should contain all our names in a coded form. So, we need to make the riddle in such a way and it should also not be discovered by anyone.”
"Thats great. Is Bea really joining? I already know her”, Hiya says, “And I was hoping someone would join in, in place of Lacey. Since you say you approve of all our names being in the password in a coded form, I think we can include Bea and code her name as Bee and my name as Hi. And your name is already a good code especially for those who don’t know you. So let the password be 'The Bee says Hi to the Rose, when they put their wands together, magic arose'. How does this sound to you, Rose?"
"While Rose decides whether to finalize the password, Hiya brings a History of Charms and an Advanced Charms book and reads a few excerpts.
Rose says, “Yeah, this would be our password.”
Rose finalizes the password and they use it to complete the Dissimulare charm by saying Revelio followed by their password. That ensures that the next time anyone wants to use the map, they can just tap the blank parchment with the wand and say the password to turn it into the map.
Rose then copies the proceedings on both the maps, while Hiya reads up some more excerpts from the two books.
In the end she says, “I think we need to not only shrink and enlarge the places around the world according to need but also make sure that when a particular place that is being viewed as enlarged, the rest of the world still needs to fit in the map, that sounds a lot like the Extension charm used by wizards and witches to fit a lot of things into a small bag and to fit large apartments into small tents. I think that’s the answer, we will have to use the Extension charm while simultaneously enlarging a place that is in need for viewing using the Enlargement charm. But we only need the enlargement charm to work on its own whenever needed, so we will have to use some variation of it, that selects a particular place in need of viewing to enlarge. I bet that will require a lot of willpower and concentration on the part of the user of the map on the particular place that needs to be enlarged, but that problem can be solved if the charm is modified to somehow always enlarge only the place the user of the map wants to view. Let’s try our Latin theory (by the way my Latin theory is now confirmed, because I read A History of Magic and it says that Latin was used for the standardization of spells) and let’s look up the Latin word for desired to indicate the place desired to be viewed. It’s either Cupitus or Desiderium, but Cupitus, I think resembles romantic love because it sounds like Cupid, so let’s try Desiderium first. The incantantion for the Enlargement charm is Engorgio (en-GOR-gee-ohh) and for Desiderium since, we dont know let’s try with different pronunciations of the incantation. So, let’s try Engorgio Desiderium(en-GOR-gee-ohh Dee-saa-ee-dee-ree-um)”, they both point wands at their maps,
but, Rose stops saying, “Wait ,let me do it only on my map, you don’t do it on your map, because otherwise if the spell goes awry or wrong, both maps will be destroyed”, the forever cautious Ravenclaw, also you are forgetting that you need to simultaneously cast the Extension charm, Capacious Extremis to fit in the rest of the world in the map while I enlarge Hogwarts.”
Hiya agrees, and says, “On the count of three, then, "One, two, three”.
Rose thinks about viewing the Hogwarts castle and casts the spell using the wand movement for the enlarging charm which is, a right handed sidewise 'V' and saying the incantation. Hiya simultaneously casts Capacious Extremis. Nothing happens to the map.
Hiya says maybe we messed the pronunciation, let’s try to use ‘Dee-saa-ed-ay-rium' instead, so that it sounds more like the word ‘desire’ and let me do it this time, please.” Hiya counts again, “ One, two, three”, thinks about viewing the Hogwarts castle and uses the incantation with the new pronounciation and same wand movement, while Rose simultaneously casts Capacious Extremis, and this time it works. The Hogwarts castle is enlarged in the map, showing all its interiors and corridors and secret passages from a birds eye view, while the rest of the world shrinks and fits itself into the map, as is evidenced by the scale on the map splitting into two, one for the Hogwarts castle and one for the rest of the map. Now, Hiya says, “We must make the parchment hold this piece of magic we just performed so that the spell doesn’t need to becast every time we use the map. How do we do that?”
Rose says, “I know. Your Latin theory?”
Hiya laughs and they look up the Latin for 'hold' and 'spell'. It appears that the Latin for hold is Tenere and spell is incantatem like in Priori Incantatem, and Hiya points her wand over the map and says Tenere Incantatem. At first, it seems like nothing happened, but then they realize it has worked. The map enlarges whatever place they want to see, such as Hiya wants to see Australia, and she can see Australia enlarged in a birds eye view into little streets and houses in cities, and forests and more, while the rest of the world simultaneously shrinks and the scales are adjusted, and Rose wants to see the Forbidden forest, so her map shows the Forbidden forest in great detail with all its little secrets and pathways, while the rest of the map shrinks and fits itself into the parchment and the scales are adjusted. When they stop trying to view these places, their maps go back to a normal scaled world map. “Yay, we did it”, they say and hug each other gleefully, excited, while the map goes back to looking like a black parchment just a few moments after they shift their attention from it due to the effect of the charm Dissimulare".
Just then, Bea walks into the library and makes for their table, asking if she missed out on the fun. Rose and Hiya excitedly update about their proceedings and also to demonstrate the magic to Bea, Rose casts all the spells in sequence one by one on a fresh piece of parchment for Bea to see, and that creates a copy of the map for Bea as well. “Thats exciting”, Bea exclaims, “I really love it. So, that means all the excitement is over then?”
Hiya says, “No, in fact the most important piece of magic for this map is still left to do. It is the Homounculus charm, a very advanced piece of magic, that forms the backbone of the Marauders map. Without the Homounculus charm, the map means nothing. After that we will have to do some ‘Adult Repelling Spells” to provide extra protection and make sure our professors don’t discover our magical map, but the Homounculus charm is the most advanced and most dangerous magic, yet to be performed here for this map.”
Bea replies, “Thats great. I am a true Gryffindor and always looking for some danger”, cause’ it’s really fun. I suggest we do some research on the Homounculus charm, though, before putting it into practice or it may backfire or cause magical injuries and land us all into trouble.”
They all agree with Bea, and since it’s getting late in the evening, they pick up their things and own copies of their maps and head back to their dorms promising to meet again in the library at the same time the next evening, ready with their wands and ready with their individual research on the Homounculus charm done."
“Guys, I did my research on the charm and when cast, it shows us the movement of the people with inked dots along with their name. More details about the spell must be here in some book. Let's get searching." Saying this, Rose, Hiya and Bea start searching for the book which has the details of the Homounculus charm. Rose finds the book and calls the rest of them to the table.
They continue the research but found nothing. “What should we do now?" Rose asks Hiya and Bea and they too continue their research but find nothing, but after an hour of search, they finally find the book.
The three of them excitedly gather around the book, and Rose reads it aloud to them. “It says, The word Homounculus, is a variation of the word Homounculus, meaning the representation of a human. It needs to be cast by pointing the wand at a map, and moving it in the shape of an H without breaking the motion, starting at the top of the left hand side, then a vertical line that makes the H, pulling it down to the bottom of the line, then pulling it back up halfway along the line, then without breaking the motion, dragging it towards the right hand side from the middle of the vertical line to form the middle bar of the H, and without breaking the motion dragging it halfway up to form the upper half of the right hand side vertical line of the H till its top, and then pulling it back down to the bottom of the right hand side vertical line, to complete the H. The incantation, though unknown to many, is a simple Homounculus (Home-Un-Qoo-Luhs).” The three of them excitedly cast the spell on their copies of their maps using the incantation and wand movement as indicated in the book. They do not succeed at first, but after a few tries, they cast it successfully after focusing on it more and exerting more willpower and concentration. The maps are now three exact working replicas of the original Marauders Map, made by the four Marauders. The three of them are elated and jump around in joy. Hiya is over the moon, and almost jumps too high over the table but crashes backwards into a bookshelf. While Rose wants to cast fireworks in the library using the Verdimillious charm or Incendio, but decides against it due to library rules and regulations, Bea and Hiya lean over their copies looking at people. They see Lacey in the Quidditch pitch practicing Quidditch with other Slytherins. They know she's on a broomstick because the dot is moving relatively very fast just like other dots inside the playing area in the Quidditch pitch. Hiya sees Professor Draekon in his office near the potions dungeon, stationery, in one place, thus probably sitting or standing near his table, or brewing something, Bea sees her fellow dorm members of Gryffindor, stationary or walking around the common room, and Rose sees Dibyarup James Potter in the Hogwartle corridor probably playing Hogwartle, and gives a satisfied smile. They decide to make a copy of the map for Lacey and do so. They are now the four younger generation of Marauders, with four copies of Marauders Maps, one each to their name. They now decide to put an ‘Adult Repelling Spell’ on their maps, to keep away adults and professors from discovering their magical mischief commodity. They use the spell "Repello Adultus" (Re-pel-LO Ad-UL-tuhs) using the same wand movement as Repello Muggletum on their copies of their maps. The three of them put their heads together and decided to use Mischief Accomplished as their password to lockup the map. They say Mischief Accomplished and then Mappa Colloportus (Map-pah Cull-low-PORE-tus) to lock up the map and make Mischief Accomplished their locking password. The map vanishes making the parchment look like a blank parchment of paper. “Great, now the map will vanish like this, whenever we say Mischief Accomplished, Rose says."
Bea then casts the same protective spell on Lacey's and then they congratulate themselves on the completion of the quest and hug each other.
Now, for an invisibility cloak, and we can walk around the Hogwarts corridors, even during curfew, undetected, using the map to be wary of any Professors likely to greet us in the corridors, and make the perfect mischief. “Mischief Accomplished”, Hiya says and the three of them clap each other’s hands on the table."
