This chapter only covers a few basic points about Horcruxes.Horcruxes are a sort of very dark magic,and information on them can only be found in the Restricted Section of the library.A Horcrux is a dark magical object which holds a fragment of a soul of a dark wizard.A dark wizard often creates horcruxes to leave fragments of his soul in the hopes of being immortal,so that when he dies,his soul still lives on in the object.The most evil dark wizard in the history of the wizarding world,Voldemort,created the most number of Horcruxes to hold fragments of his soul,a total of seven.His first six intentional horcruxes were Helga Hufflepuff's cup,Salazar Slytherin's locket,his own diary,Marvolo Gaunt's ring,Rowena Ravenclaw's diadem from her crown,and Nagini,his poisonous pet snake.His seventh and last accidental Horcrux was Harry Potter,whom he intended to kill,but his killing curse(curses are types of dark spells that cause the most harm) backfired due to Harry being protected by the magic of his mother's love,and Voldemort lost his bodily form instead,and Harry became his accidental seventh and last horcrux instead of dying.In order to make a Horcrux,one must make a sacrifice,which is done by killing or murdering people.Horcruxes are very difficult to destroy,and can only be destroyed by objects and things called Horcrux destroyers,some of which are Godric Gryffindor's sword,basilisk fangs(Basilisks are a very dangerous magical creature,which look like giant snakes and have yellow eyes,if anyone looks into the eyes of a basilisk directly,it causes instant death and if anyone looks indirectly into the eyes of the basilisk like through a mirror or a camera lens,it causes petrification.You will read more about basilisks in your CoMC classes.) and Fiendfyre(a type of magically created fire that destroys everything in its wake and cannot be put out by water).

Hallows or the Deathly Hallows are three magical objects that were created by Death and given to three brothers in the Peverell family.They include the Elder Wand which is unbeatable in a duel with any other wand and gives its master an unbeatable victory,and always does the bidding of its master,but when disarmed belongs to the disarmer(you will learn about the disarming charm in DADA classes)and does his bidding,the Resurrection stone,which temporarily summons the spirits of the dead,and the Cloak of Invisibility(the only truely invisible cloak,now owned by Harry Potter,which never fades or loses its invisibility),which renders the user completely invisible.All these three were once in possession of Harry Potter.The sign of the Deathly Hallows is a sign showing the symbols of the three,together in one sign.
