Chapter 30
I whisper into the charged air, "I need a light." Nothing. I try again. "I need a light." Nothing. Every time, my voice grows louder, until I'm practically screaming. "I NEED A LIGHT!" Suddenly, a little will o' the wisp poofs into existence right in front of me. It tinkles up to my ear, a tiny voice.
"I can help you make your wildest dreams come true. Just tell me what you want," it whispers. Once again, I am tempted to follow it. But I steel myself and whiper back, "You know what I want? See that man over there, who keeps changing into a feathered beast?" The wisp tinkles in acknowledgement. "I'm positive that he would just LOVE to have his dreams come true." The wisp bobs in the air a bit, and then zips off toward Everett.
I watch as Everett confers with the tiny ball of light. He follows it as it moves slowly, going further and further, closer to the cliff's edge. He takes the final step- and plummets over the edge. I hold back a scream, watching as he drops into the churning black waters. A cheer goes up from our army, and the Green colonel shakes my hand reluctantly.
"I hereby swear that we will never attack your kingdom again, as long as we all shall live and longer." He cracks a half-smile, as he is paraphrasing the words I spoke before I submitted myself to Death's clutches. I smile softly back, and then he and his army troop out.
