Muggle Tv Series Review: Merlin
Chapter 18
-Muggle Television Series Review-
Name: Merlin (2007-2012)
Category: Fantasy
Many of you will not have heard of this program; a modern take on the tales if King Arthur, but I can definitely recommend it with enthusiasm. It was my childhood TV program and I grew up admiring and idolizing both the characters and cast. It is also a very family friendly watch, combining elements of drama, mystery, action, comedy, and fantasy.
Overview:
The series follows the main character, Merlin, as a young man, as he follows his destiny to protect the somewhat arrogant Prince Arthur. However, Merlin struggles a lot with keeping his magic hidden during his days in Camelot, as it is banned and practicing it is punishable by death. There are many villains and dangers faced and dealt with during the five seasons before inevitably leading to a magnificent and somewhat heart-wrenching finale. However, some may not like it du to it’s twist on a classic fairytale or humour.
Characters:
The twists on the original characters from the tales of King Arthur is on of the highlights of the show; especially the fact that Merlin and Arthur are both young men to start with. Other characters involve Morgana Pendragon, who's character develops drastically over the run of the series, and Guinevere, a servant girl who eventually is able to marry Arthur despite her social status. Mordred and Lancelot, as well as many other knights make appearances and some become reoccurring characters. There's also Merlin's wise mentor, Gaius, who plays a considerable role in the series, guiding Merlin through many adventures, and Arthur's ruthless and magic-hating father King Uther Pendragon. On the whole, the character development is superb and the more modern twists attractive. The relationships between the characters are also very well thought out, particularly the relationship of Merlin and Arthur, which goes from hated rivals to great friends and Servant to trusted advisor. ★★★★★
Cast and Acting:
The cast not only features many new and talented actors but also some famous guest appearances and reoccurring roles, including Anthony Head as Uther Pendragon, Richard Wilson as Gaius, Emilia Fox as Morgause, Morgana's evil sister, Charles Dance, Asa Butterfield and more.
The cast of new actors is equally superb, getting the relationships and developments if the characters perfect. Colin Morgan shines as Merlin, as does Bradley James in the role of Arthur, achieving the perfect balance of arrogance and inner chivalry and softness, also getting laughs with lighthearted comedy. Katie McGrath as Morgana plays both the good girl and the villain to perfection and Angel Coulby exacts Guinevere's inner steel and ultimate loyalty. ★★★★ ½
Writing:
The writing for Merlin combines yet again the most attractive qualities and is overall superb, adding touches of comedy as well as deep drama and interesting fantasy twists. The Characters come across strong and individual and the pace perfect. However, in the final series it appears ideas were beginning get a little less interesting and it was ended at the optimum time.
On the Whole:
Merlin is a must-see series for Harry Potter fans or otherwise those who simply enjoy fantasy. It is perfect to watch with your friends and/or family and you will find both draws you into the storyline and relaxes you with classic humor and drama.
OVERALL RATING:★★★★½
