CHRM-101 WEEK I

Chapter 3

Introduction

The introduction to Charms class covers the basics of spellcasting, including correct pronunciation, wand movements, and casting basic charms. It also introduces wandlore, explaining the importance of wands, their materials, and proper care. The class discusses the origin of modern spellcasting and the relevant laws to be followed when using magic to avoid trouble with the Ministry of Magic. More in-depth historical aspects will be explored in the History of Magic classes.

Brief History and Essential Laws

In ancient times, magic was openly practiced and revered in places like Greece and Egypt. The Ollivander family started wand-making around 382 B.C.E., improving the craft. From 1000 C.E., the magical world began to separate from Muggles, forming various magical governments. The 1600s saw persecution of witches and wizards, leading to the International Statute of Secrecy in 1689, which hid magic from Muggles. Over time, magic became legendary in Muggle literature, often based on real events. The Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery in 1875 prohibits underage wizards from using magic outside of school, with few exceptions. The Ministry of Magic enforces these laws, using the Trace to monitor underage magic use. The Ministry can distinguish between magical and Muggle homes, making underage magic in Muggle households automatically illegal.

The Discovery of Wands

In the past, magic was uncontrolled and often led to chaotic bursts of power. Those with weak magical affinity lived normally, while others caused havoc and entered Muggle mythology. To gain control, wizards used various primitive tools like crystals and crude wands. The modern wand, with a core from a powerful magical creature, became the most effective focus for channeling power. In Charms class, students will learn how centuries of knowledge and experimentation have led to the ability to turn their will into reality, shaping and sending magic into the world. Reflecting on magical history can help understand the class's teachings better.

The Wand-Lighting and Wand-Extinguishing Charms

The Wand-Lighting Charm is a simple yet valuable spell that allows witches and wizards to illuminate the tip of their wands. It was first created by Levina Monkstanley in the 18th century and has since become widely used. Besides providing light, it has various other applications. Young magical folks find it amusing to watch the colors change when using the charm. In the Ministry of Magic, it is utilized as a safe and convenient method for casting votes. Additionally, the charm can be used to repel incorporeal threats such as the Gytrash and malevolent spirits. Overall, it is an essential and versatile spell for any magic user.

The Wand-Lighting Charm
Incantation: Lumos (pronounced ‘LOO-mos’)
Wand Movement: Single counter-clockwise loop
Willpower: Low; determines the color of the light
Concentration: Low; lighting up the top of your wand

The successful casting of the Wand-Lighting Charm depends on finding the right balance between wand movement and mental focus. Too much willpower results in a scarlet light, while too little produces a pearly white light. A light yellow light indicates the right effort. However, circumstances may require adjustments to achieve a weaker or stronger light.

Once the Wand-Lighting Charm is cast, it does not require continuous magical energy flow to maintain the light. However, if the wizard or witch releases their grip on the wand, the light will go out. Very skilled practitioners may still see their wand even in darkness, but this is a challenging task.

An equally simple and important counter to the Wand-Lighting Charm is the Wand-Extinguishing Charm. It serves the sole purpose of canceling out the effects of the Wand-Lighting Charm. This counter-charm is personal and will only work on the caster's own wand or any wand they happen to be holding that is lit.

The Wand-Extinguishing Charm
Incantation: Nox (pronounced ‘NOCK-ss’)
Wand Movement: Flick of the wand
Willpower: None
Concentration: None
