PTNS-101 WEEK III

Chapter 20

The process of brewing potions is delicate and difficult, and paying attention to all controllable variables is essential. Potion brewing can be dangerous and, if done incorrectly, can result in injury or even death. Safety and proper procedure are critical, and will be emphasized in future lessons.

A ray of light showing the way (tools of the trade)

Potionists develop strong emotional ties to their cauldrons, even talking to or whispering to them during the brewing process.

The different materials used in the manufacture of cauldrons in Great Britain are: pewter, brass and copper. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, such as the speed of preparation and the precision required to manipulate them. In addition, there are rarer and more expensive materials, such as silver cauldrons and fire crab cauldrons, the latter limited due to international sanctions to protect colonies of these creatures in the Fiji Islands.

Safety is important in the potion brewing process, including the use of dragonskin gloves, goggles, and the stirring wand. You also need other necessary supplies at the brewing station, such as scales, measuring cups, knives and cutting boards, mortars and pestles for crushing ingredients, and wooden spoons for stirring the potion.

"Measure" or "standard measure" is a standardized unit of volume used in potion recipes. It is important to clean both the cauldron and the implements to avoid unwanted interactions between ingredients and contamination in the preparation of future potions.

It is also important to keep a well-ordered laboratory and classify ingredients sensibly for greater efficiency in the potion-making process. Having a messy lab carries risks, which can negatively affect the results of a potion.

The flame that burns (preparation processes)

The art of brewing potions requires patience and precision, balancing volatile magical ingredients with specific timing and methodologies. It is important to follow the instructions, especially for the inexperienced, to avoid unpleasant effects. It is advised to prepare ingredients ahead of time when possible. Some cauldrons are self-heating, but others prefer a real flame. Adding ingredients in the correct order is crucial for proper reactions. Stirring with the wand is necessary, but the wand should not be dipped into the potion. The preparation time and the need to label the glass vials with relevant information before storing the potions are discussed.
