TNFG-101 WEEK II

Chapter 2

This information is taken from the notes provided by Professor Mitchell

INTRODUCTION

The four branches of the transfiguration were defined in 1651.

The branches are: transformation, disappearance, conjuration and untransfiguration.

TRANSFORMATION

It is the most common branch of transfiguration. It splits into three sub-branches, though some wizards think it should split into four.

The branches are:

-trans-species transformation

-change

-human transfiguration

-general transformation (the fourth)

The general transformation is divided, in turn, into: from inanimate to inanimate, from inanimate to animate, and from animate to animate.

Change spells are defined as changing an essential detail of an object or swapping the physical location of two items.

Human transfiguration transforms the body of a magician.

Animagi are wizards with the ability to fully turn into animals, but without losing human sentience. It is learned and voluntary, but very difficult to master.

Shapeshifters are people with the ability to change parts of their appearance at will. It's a genetic trait, unlike animagi.

The werewolves are different from the previous two cases, since they are forced to transform each full moon. The Wolfsbane Potion can keep their animal instincts at bay and still be human in their mind.

VANISHING

Vanishing is a branch of transfiguration that encompasses magic that causes an object to disappear from the world. It is more difficult to make the object disappear the more complex it is. Technically, it only takes one spell to make something disappear.

CONJURATION

The conjuration is more complicated than the disappearance. The conjured elements must be formed from the particles around us. Whatever you wish to conjure must first exist in the world.

UNTRANSFIGURATION

Unstransfiguration is precisely what it sounds like. It is used to undo previous transformations. But, for example, you can't undo the disappearance, and the things we conjure up, they disappear after a while.
