Chapter 14
MESOPOTAMIA
In Mesopotamia, specifically in the city-state of Sumer, the Sumerians were pioneers in the creation of healing and defensive potions. His magic was powerful and revered as a gift from the gods. The figure of Gilgamesh, considered two thirds god and one third human, was actually a magician and possibly used magic to prolong his life. He fought against the Huwawa beast, which resembles the Nundu. Also, they mention Ja'mam Biba, a Muggle woman whose severance letter influenced the Code of Hammurabi, though the letter also notes tensions between magical and non-magical people in the region.
PHOENICE
Phoenicia was a highly magical culture known for its wealth, trade, and seafaring prowess. They developed a mysterious language known as Phoenician, which has been difficult for even expert linguists to decipher. They used magical woods in their ships, making them a unique and powerful maritime power. Spells were found in Egypt dating back to Phoenicia, suggesting that they practiced wandless ritual magic. Ancient magic was not without its dangers, however, and even experts had to be wary of the unexpected effects of ancient spells and wands.
THE INDO RIVER VALLEY
The Indus River Valley was home to a highly magical civilization with well-developed artifacts and spells. The spells were more similar to the current ones in terms of refinement and effectiveness. Wizards were found at high levels of society, and a brotherhood of wizard priests known as the B'ha-Rahi Brotherhood protected the villagers from the vampires of Lahoo. Lahsun, leader of the Brotherhood, was known for his fight against vampires and teaching him to the villagers to protect themselves. Vampires were a terrifying threat at the time, and Lashun was worshiped as a god by his people.
