Monster (Marauders Era)

written by Cayla Wilderman

Rachel Wagner doesn't want to have anything to do with the Marauders. She wants to stay the quiet, ignored girl that she was since she started school.
But when she and Remus Lupin begin studying together at the library every night, she wonders if all the Marauders are as bad as Sirius and James.
Meanwhile, a brilliant and powerful wizard named Tom Riddle is gaining followers all the time. He is looking for excellent wizards all around England to carry out his duties. He decides to look at Hogwarts first, disguising himself as a temporary Herbology teacher. Few students even know about Tom Riddle's growing power, and not many of them are willing to warn others about “Professor Delrid.” Luckily, one of them happens to be Remus John Lupin, who is willing to tell Dumbledore about this either brilliant or monstrous wizard. But what happens when Rachel finds out about Remus's “furry little problem,” and Rachel decides to confide in Professor Delrid?

Chapter Eight - Remus

Chapter 9

I vaguely remember James
knocking me out. Carrying me to the hospital wing, still kicking and
thrashing, despite the fact that I was unconscious.

I vaguely remember seeing
Sirius's splintered face bleeding heavily in the bed beside me. James
kneeling by my bed and whispering to me that Madam Pomfrey thought
that Sirius wasn't going to make it. Seeing his tears fall onto my
sheets.

Though I remembered every
minute of the nightmare I had that night.

I was sitting in the
garden with Rachel. The moon was out and the only light was the glow
from Rachel's bright green eyes. She smiled and laughed as we talked.
Every once in a while, we'd stare deeply into each other's eyes.

Suddenly, I felt my bones
lengthening and dark gray hair growing all over me until I was a wild
wolf. I heard Rachel scream, frozen in fear.

My friends had forgotten
the date and hadn't come. Piercing headaches engulfed my skull. Part
of me was screaming to kill, and the other was what was keeping me
from attacking Rachel.

After probably ten minutes
of us staring at each other, I pounced on her.

I pounced on her and bit
her on the neck.

She laid there, still as a
rock, eyes wide open.

“Remus. Remus, wake up,
it's a dream.” I heard a stern voice say. I opened my eyes and saw
Madam Pomfrey muttering spells and incantations above me.

“You're getting out of here
in the evening. All James gave you was a small concussion.” she
said, tapping my bandaged head.

“W-where – is – he?”
I croaked.

“He'll probably come in
about three hours.” she said, then picked up her tools and set them
on Sirius's bedside.

I almost got sick when I saw
Sirius.

His face had shards of glass
stuck in them. He had one in his eye, even. He had cuts and scratches
all over his face, shoulders, and chest. He had dark circles under
his eyes, and he was breathing heavily and unevenly.

I spent the rest of the day
staring at the ceiling, promising myself never, never, to
fall in love again.

Because that is all love can
do to you.

Hurt you.
