Monster (Marauders Era)

written by Cayla Wilderman

Rachel Wagner doesn't want to have anything to do with the Marauders. She wants to stay the quiet, ignored girl that she was since she started school.
But when she and Remus Lupin begin studying together at the library every night, she wonders if all the Marauders are as bad as Sirius and James.
Meanwhile, a brilliant and powerful wizard named Tom Riddle is gaining followers all the time. He is looking for excellent wizards all around England to carry out his duties. He decides to look at Hogwarts first, disguising himself as a temporary Herbology teacher. Few students even know about Tom Riddle's growing power, and not many of them are willing to warn others about “Professor Delrid.” Luckily, one of them happens to be Remus John Lupin, who is willing to tell Dumbledore about this either brilliant or monstrous wizard. But what happens when Rachel finds out about Remus's “furry little problem,” and Rachel decides to confide in Professor Delrid?

Chapter Twenty-Two - Remus

Chapter 23

I was taking notes when it
happened.

Rachel decided to kill me.

She was sitting by me, just
taking notes during Herbology.

That's it.

“Hey, Remus?” she asked,
looking at me with her eyebrows raised.

“Yeah?”

“What was your favorite
book again?” I frowned. I had told her about my favorite series
tons of times; why was she asking me about it now?

“Er – it's 'The Hunter's
Dreams'. I'd already told you about it -” She had me pinned on the
wall. Gritting her teeth, smiling slightly. Evilly. It scared me
tremendously. Where was Rachel? This wasn't – couldn't be – her.

“Remus,” she whispered.
This wasn't her. Not her voice. It sounded almost like a snake,
except strangely distorted to be put in a human's mouth. “Tell me
about the girl.”

“Girl?” I said,
terrified. “What girl?”

“Rachel,” the snake
Rachel hissed. “Tell me about the curse.”

“No,” I said, clenching
my jaw. “You can't make me.” the snake made a strange hissing
sound and stuck her tongue out almost teasingly.

“Oh, yess, yes, I can. I
very much can.” I shook my head. This was a dream. A terrible,
unreal dream. Not real.

“Remus – don't let them
hurt you -” This was really her. She looked at me desperately.
“Don't let them – kill me if you need to -” I shook my head.
No. No. I will not kill her.

“Haha, this is quite
amusing,” Rachel was gone. The snake was back. Rachel's face went
slack as the snake overtook her. “You think you can win.”

I glanced at the professor at
the other side of the room. He was staring at me, amused. I saw the
knife at the other end of the desk, meant for cutting plants. I
stared at it hopelessly.

“You can't kill yourself,”
she snake hissed. “We won't let you until you tell us about her.”

“I – won't – tell -”
I clenched my teeth, trying to squirm out of the snake's grip without
hurting the real Rachel.

I grabbed my wand from my
back pocket and tried to think of spells that could help me but not
hurt her.

“Wingardium
Leviosa!”
I shouted, pointing
my wand at Rachel. She floated into the air and followed my wand into
the closet where the magical plants were. I picked up a bit of
gillyweed and ran out of the castle.

“You can't kill me,” the
snake hissed again. I stuffed gillyweed into her mouth and threw her
into the lake. Without thinking.

And I walked away. Without
thinking.

I had forgotten that
gillyweed only lasted an hour. I finally remembered a day later.
