Charms 2 Describe Your Wand
Chapter 7
Essay Prompt
This assignment will tie in directly with Lesson Three, so please make sure you give it the effort it deserves. You must use material found within the textbook Quintessential Magic: An Introduction to Charms, Chapter Five. Please pay extra attention to details regarding multiple woods or multiple cores! You should also use the Pottermore Wikia to look up wand wood, core, flexibility and length information.
I would like you to tell me the details surrounding how you procured your wand. Most witches and wizards just starting their magical education find themselves going to Ollivander, the premier wand crafter in Great Britain (and, some would argue, the world). However, some may find that they can't afford a new wand and must use an inherited one, or else they may have purchased one from another wandmaker. IMPORTANT! Please begin the assignment by noting the following information! If you do not, you will receive a 10% reduction to your grade.
Wand Length:
Wand Flexibility:
Wand Wood:
Wand Core:
Your assignment should be at least three paragraphs or more (not including the wand details above). Use the three paragraphs to describe the details of how you obtained your wand in any fashion you wish (you can recount the experience as though writing to a friend or write it in the form of a role-play if you wish).
You should also post your response in the discussion forum for Lesson Two and check out other students' responses. This is not required but could help you learn about other students' wands and give you the chance to meet new people.

Wand Lore is a strange and fascinating subject that could fill many volumes if fully explored. This text focuses on the basic properties of wands that all students including us should be familiar with.
The wand is an extension of the witch or wizard. It is our most important essential tool, and to be without it is to be severely limited. The most important time in any witch or wizard's career may be when they obtain their own first wand. It is oft the saying that "The Wand chooses the Wizard". This is because different wands are inclined toward different temperaments and personalities. A Dark Wizard would find a wand with Unicorn Tail Hair is extremely difficult to use, for example, and someone with evil in their heart is will not find a wand that agrees with them.
There are 3 things we must know about our wand:
• Length and Flexibility
• Wood Type
• Core
Core
A wand's core material is always made from some part of another magical being or animal. While different materials produce different types of wands, any Ollivander wand in recent memory has been made from only three: either unicorn tail hair, dragon heartstrings, and phoenix feathers. Other material such as kelpie mane, veela hair or troll whiskers either possesses insufficient power or have a considerable drawback. Veela hair, for example, produces wands that are temperamental. Wands with these cores are usually only found when a witch or wizard has had to take it from a family member, though some wand makers may still use them on occasion.
