Creature Journal #4
Today, I am journaling about the Pogrebin. I find them interesting because they seem so easy to detect and such a danger to humans given the amount they must eat, that it's a wonder their populations aren't shrinking. Given that a large rock isn't very easy to ignore, especially when the same large rock seems to always be behind you each time you check, it seems like Russian and Czech people would know about the threat and be suspicious of rocks of a certain size. At least in the winter, one would think more Pogrebins would starve or be forced to live entirely on rats simply because humans should be smarter than Pogrebins. That is, seemingly, not the case since we are being warned about them in class. If the danger is so great, why aren't the Ministries of those countries significantly thinning the population of Pogrebins for the safety of both Muggles and Wizards in the area?
Going hiking in Russia, I always make sure to look behind me often and scan for boulders. Once I see a boulder, I try to memorize its contours, walk for a few minutes, and then turn around to scan again. If I see another boulder with the same contours, I walk up to it and nudge it with my foot. If it moves, I know for sure it is a Pogrebin and I kick it right in its little face while calling an alert to the adult with whom I am hiking. That allows them to cast a stunning spell and for us to apparate to another trail to finish our hike.
