A Welcome of Sorts

The scene opens with JENNA talking to SCORPIUS at the
feast and then the HEADMISTRESS announcing the end of the feast. The first year
Slytherins are then called to attention by a female prefect as the rest of the
hall begins to stir and people begin to get up.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: Slytherin First-years, over here!

JENNA looks at SCOPRIUS, who shrugs, ALBUS watching but not saying
anything.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: Ickle firsties move your arses over
here!

JENNA starts walking over to the PREFECT and SCORPIUS follows, ALBUS
also going.

JENNA: Ummm, we’re first years.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: (looking down at JENNA) Good for
you. Actually, no, it’s not a good at all, but the again, I don’t really give a
shit. Come on, I’ve gotta get you to the common room.

The PREFECT turns back round.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: God, why do midgets have to be such
a pain in the arse? FIRST YEAR SLYTHERINS OVER HERE!

More first years gather and SCORPIUS beckons a couple of his friends
from the table. The PREFECT checks that all are there and then addresses them.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: Right, who’s who? What about you?

The PREFECT points at JENNA

JENNA: I’m, umm, Jenna McLaggen

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: Right, Mclaggen. Ok, and you, pale
midget?

SCORPIUS frowns.

SCORPIUS: Malfoy. Scorpius Malfoy.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: (smiles) Excellent.

ALBUS: Why is it excellent?

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: (looks down at ALBUS) And you would
be?

ALBUS: Albus Potter

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: Ah, so you’re that little Potter.

ALBUS: ‘that’ little
Potter?

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: There’s a lot circulating about you,
Potter.

ALBUS:  And what’s
circulating?

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: A lot. But I’m not going to waste
my time on it. Follow me.

ALBUS opens his mouth, shuts it, then follows, JENNA glancing behind at him. The
PREFECT talks as they make their way through the halls.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: So welcome to Slytherin. There are
a few rules, but since none of you give a damn, I won’t go into that. Our house
is the best, to us, and the thing all us Slytherins should have in common is
that we love our house.

The procession turns a corner and the PREFECT clambers onto a
staircase.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: Oh, and I’d better warn you about
these, though some of you should already know – the staircases have minds of
their own. Seriously, they seem set to kill you, so you need to watch out.

The PREFECT pauses to jump a step, which vanishes as she does so.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: See what I mean, midgets? (laughs)
Oh come on, don’t look so terrified. It’s not very fun if you’re petrified the
entire time.

They come of the staircase on a lower level and the PREFECT continues
walking and talking.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: The Slytherin quarters are located
in the dungeons – best part of the castle if you ask me. But we have to go a
long way down. Oh, and our head of house is the awesome Tanya Dax, Professor of
Astronomy. We prefects won’t listen to your problems, but she will. Thouh
hopefully you won’t have any.

They go down another flight of stairs.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: There are ten of you, if you can’t
count, and the guys’ll be in one dorm and the girls in another. You’ll do
classes together though, and with another set of students from another house.
There are a few tips when it comes to that – if it’s the Hufflepuffs, leave
them, if it’s the Ravenclaws, tease them, and if it’s the Gryffindoors, beat
them.

JENNA: Why?

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: (laughs) To keep up the satisfying
rivalry between houses. You’ll understand soon enough. Ah, here we are!

They pull up outside the entrance to the common room.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: You get into the common room and
dorms using a password that changes every few weeks. It’s ‘Labyrinth’ at the
moment. Just speak it and you can get in. Like so; ‘LABYRINTH’!

The door opens and the PREFECT walks in, the first
years following. She turns back to them once their inside and the door has
shut.

SLYTHERIN PREFECT: Ok, so this is the common room.
I’ll leave you here. I’m Marilyn, by the way, but don’t you dare disturb me for
any pointless matters.

MARALYN then takes hold of a passing fifth-year boy and pulls him back.

MARILYN: Oh, and this is my dooshebag partner prefect
Lewis, who failed to turn up to help get you here.

LEWIS: Hey! I was busy.

MARILYN: (snorts) Yeah right (she turns back to the
first years) Ok, shoo! Make yourselves comfortable. Your dorms are down there
(she gestures to a corridor off the common room) and your trunks have already
been shipped there. And remember – no wandering around the castle after hours!

MARILYN moves off and the first years stay standing for a second. The
JENNA, without a word, walks off towards the dormitories. SCORPIUS looks at her
retreating, then smirks and moves to sit down on one of the black leather
armchairs.

SCORPIUS: (to the other Slytherins) Come on, let’s get
comfortable like the prefect said.

The others move to sit down and they strike up a
conversation, leaving ALBUS stood there alone. SCORPIUS sees this and smirks
maliciously at him, ALBUS glaring back and then moving to walk to the
dormitories. When he arrives there, he looks around in distaste and then simply
throws himself onto the bed.

Character
Discussion:

ALBUS:

Albus continues to seem downhearted in this and bitter
towards Scorpius. His character should be along the lines mopey and distasteful
through the scene.

SCORPIUS:

Scorpius has realised he can really work Albus up and
uses it in the end of this scene. It is advisable to make him seem at home.

JENNA:

From the next scene which will be coming next Issue,
you will realise that Jenna is a little less for Slytherin than she seems, and
here she is both quiet and observing, though the only one to ask questions.

Apologies for
the short script this time! It just made sense to end it there.
