Lesson 5 - Gnomes

-  Brown, potato looking creature



-  1' tall



-  Throughout Europe and North America



-  7-10 years



-  Herbivores – feed on plants and horklumps



-  Live in interconnected underground tunnels – up to 1 to 2 miles long, width of yard



-  Live as large colony; all communal space – rooms have certain purpose

     o  Sitting rooms – entertainment



    o  Breeding rooms – like other mammals, no set mates, rotate through 2 or 3



          ~  Gestation is 59-62 days (2 months); 1 baby (pup) who stay with the colony for life



          ~  Start around 6 mo.



          ~  6 pups a year, most take break so only 3 or 4



     o  Food storage



     o  Sleeping rooms



-  Removal



     o  Method 1



           §  Grab head and swing around in a circle



           §  Let go and fling from yard



           §  Too dizzy to come back



           §  Other flock to surface to watch



           §  After 5 or 6, should file out



           §  May come back due to low intelligence



     o  Method 2



           §  Release a Jarvey in the yard



           §  Will eat 1 or 2 gnomes, rest will flee



     o  Will move to a new yard with an abandoned tunnel system or new yard and make tunnels



           §  Takes 2-3 months to create full set



-  Most people believe gnomes don't have magic



-  Xenophilius Lovegood – saliva has beneficial properties that raises creativity; never proven
