Lesson 3 - Bowtruckles
Chapter 3
**Author's Note**
Sorry for the lack of picture on this one, but there really aren't any good ones. You can check out the ones in the lesson if you want to see them, but I didn't really like any picture of a bow truckle I could find. There isn't even an article on them on Pottermore to get an officially sourced illustration.
Bowtruckles
- Tree guardian
- Size of human hand
- Resemble stick to blend with tree
- 2 razor sharp fingers on each hand, for defense
- XX
- Rather aggressive towards anyone that comes near their tree
o Have to distract bowtruckle to collect from the tree with food (ie. Wood lice)
~ Wood lice (a woodlouse)
~ Crustacean w/ long segmented exoskeletons, 14 limbs
~ Aka Roly-Poly
~ Over 5,000 species
o Distracting with 10-15 wood lice will buy you 5-10 minutes
o Better to distract with faerie eggs
~ Collect from undersides of leaves
~ Faerie very vicious when guarding their eggs
~ 20-30 eggs buys about 20 minutes
~ Best to have enough for 2 or 3 meals
- Bone structure
o Have hollow bones
o Lightweight
o Outer portion of bone – modified mineralized osseous tissue
o No joints in arms, one long bone
o Fingers have 4 bones each
- Reproduction
o When dies, one bone remains active, grows into new adult
- Average lifespan – 50 years (oldest 400)
o Avg is combo of natural causes, humans, and disease (ie tree fungus – can be saved with healing charms)
o Many trees burned and bowtruckles killed during witch trials
- Originated from charmed sticks around 200-450 AD that gained sentience
- Help protect good wand trees
