The Train Ride

Chapter 1

I ran into a wall. Headfirst. But nothing happened. I was starting my first year at Hogwarts, and someone told me to run into a wall. I watched them do it first, but they just vanished. So I tried.

Now I am on Platform 9 and 3/4, and the train station is crowded and loud. I push myself through the crowd, trying to get to the train, which has just arrived. I would be late for sure, but I wouldn't miss it. I couldn't! My owl twittered about over my head, and his screeching was driving me crazy. Stupid owl.

I barely made it on the train, but now I had nowhere to sit. I went over to the first seat I could find, to find it full of sixth years. One of the boys said, "This is the Prefect place. Sit somewhere else." They shut the glass door in my face. Just then, the train started to move. What a bunch of idiots, I thought. I poked around the train, but I was rejected in every one. Then I looked towards the back, and found three compartments. One had two boys, one a redhead and the other a jet black haired boy with glasses in it, another had a blonde haired boy and a bushy haired girl inside, and the last had four girls talking loudly in it. They were all first years. I had no idea who to sit with, but I finally decided to sit with the bushy haired girl and the blonde boy.

As I walked in, the boy said, "You can sit here, but we are definitely not going to be friends." I was taken aback by the rude welcome, but I sat down anyways. The girl, who introduced herself as Hermione, talked a lot, and we became good friends right away.

Three hours later, Hermione asked, "So... What Hogwarts house do you want to be in? There's Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Griffindor." She added, remembering I had no idea what the houses were.

I asked, "Wait, slow down. What is the difference between houses?" Hermione said, "Well, Hufflepuff everyone thinks is full of duffers, but it's a loyal, hardworking house that I think would hold some really kind people inside, based on people in history books that were in Hufflepuff... Then there is Ravenclaw, which is pretty much the smart house. And Griffindor. The brave house. Then there is Slytherin... That is the sort-of the sly house. Nobody good has ever went into that house. And everyone evil at Hogwarts always ends up in Slytherin, like you-know-who."

I was confused. "Who is you-know-who?" Hermione said, "The dark Lord. He-who-must-not-be-named." She sighed hopelessly. A slick, cold voice said, "Voldemort." Hermione and I looked at the boy. "Voldemort?" I said loudly. "Who's that?"

Hermione said, "Don't say his name! Everyone in the wizarding world is afraid of him! He was the darkest and most powerful wizard of all time! He killed a whole bunch of people. Here, read this." She handed me a book. It said, "The Dark Lord and his path of Destruction." I began to read it.

While I read, Hermione looked over my shoulder and pointed out certain parts to me, while the boy just studied us closely, his eyes narrowed. I quickly got into the book and read it until the end, and this book was around 3,465 pages long, so it took a while. When I finished it, Hermione said. "Well, now you know what Slytherin is like!" The boy sneered. "That isn't true. Slytherin is proud and bold. They aren't afraid to do anything."

Hermione said, "And can you prove that?" I hated to listen to arguments, so I tried to change the subject. "What is your name?" I asked the boy. He said, "Draco. Draco Malfoy." Hermione laughed. "I know you now! Willow, don't listen to him. He is from a bad family."

Draco snarled at Hermione. "My family knows what to keep their noses out of, unlike you." Hermione opened her mouth, about to say something, then closed it again, deciding against it.

An awkward silence hung over us for the rest of the train ride, and nobody spoke until the train stopped. "Well, see you guys later." Hermione said, shooting an annoyed look at Draco.

I said, "Yep. You too." Draco got up and left soon after, and I realized I never gave Hermione back her book. I stuck it in my robes and left.
