Chapter 17

Jade made a tiny moaning sound, and Madame Santana, the Healer in Chief, rushed over to her.

"Oh my goodness, someone, get her to a bed!"

Jack obligingly placed her on one of the cots lining the room. "Madame, is she going to be alright?"

Madame
Santana was busy performing a check on Jade with her wand. "What,
dearie? Oh yes, Miss Pevensie will be alright soon. She has a couple of
broken ribs, and her brain's going a bit funny from lack of oxygen, but
nothing any experienced healer can't fix in a jiff. What's this?" She
whirled on Jack, Alana, West, and Abigail. "Would one of you mind
telling me why she's sparkling like a vampire?"

"Ssh," said Professor Clearwater. "She's about to wake up."

Not thirty seconds later, Jade stirred. She stretched her torso up, winced, and opened her eyes. "What...Where am I?"

Jack opened his mouth to answer. "You're in the Hosp- OW! What was that for?" Alana had stomped on his foot.

"You're in the Hospital Wing, Jade." She turned on Jack. "And that was to remind you that you may be her boyfriend, but West and I are her best friends and we were here first. So answering her questions falls to ME."

"Why are all of the teachers here?"

West butted in. "They want to hear about what happened."

Jade shrugged amicably. "Oh, alright then."

The
headmaster turned to her. "Why don't we start with you, Miss Pevensie.
Surely you have some good excuse for sneaking out of your room after you
should have been asleep and seeking out an incredibly dangerous beast
that could have killed you?"

She swallowed. "I...I...I didn't
want my friends to get hurt. Alana and West got really hurt last time we
were in a dangerous situation together. I wanted to protect them, but
they came back to me anyway. When I fell off the cliff, Jack caught me.
He helped me wake up. Alana and West and even Abigail helped me defeat
the Windigo, and they were so loyal to me. I threw a bit of an
embarrassing fit at them earlier, but they weren't even mad at me. That-
that's true friendship." On the last sentence, her voice broke and she
burst into tears.

Alana rubbed her back. "Don't cry, Jade. It's okay."

Professor Morris rubbed his stubbly chin. "So why is she glowing?"

Jack
stepped up to face them. "She had this bottle of Illumination Potion,
she said, but it fell a really long distance and I think something
happened to it. She uncapped it, and it shot her into the air and she
started glowing. She threw light and her eyes turned all gold. It was
weird and cool."

"Her eyes are still gold," West noted, pointing.

Professor
Clearwater came forward and placed a hand on Jade's cheek. "She- I've
never felt this much power in my life. It wasn't the potion that made
her light up, it was the raw ability inside of her. Over time, something
happened, and now she's going to be like this for the rest of her life,
most likely."

"Why?" The panicked word slipped from Jade's mouth before she could stop herself. "I'm already weird, do I have to be weirder?"

"No.
You aren't weird. This is a blessing, my dear. You are a Phoenix
Spawne, a very rare thing. A Phoenix Spawne is someone who has an
incredibly powerful soul. You, my dear, are a brilliant being, and also
very dangerous. You must use your power wisely every time you rise from
the ashes, otherwise the whole world could be set aflame."

"But what can she do? Surely she will need training in her powers." Headmaster Thornbeck looked worried.

"Her
power is simple to use but hard to control. Jade must only feel a
passionate emotion- never sadness, but anger or protectiveness or even
pure joy- and she will start to glow and shoot up into the air. I
recommend that she take Occlumency classes to learn to focus her energy
and wield her new ability well."

Jade turned and winced again, her broken ribs paining her. "Should I keep it a secret?"

"No, you do not have to hide it, but do not throw it out everywhere. Be conservative with it."

West, who had been looking on the entire time, piped up. "Will Jade be okay in time for the masquerade ball?"

Madame
Santana looked up from pouring potions into glasses for Jade to drink.
"She should be alright by the weekend, yes. I want her to spend the
night in here, and not to dance too hard at the ball. Now clear out, all
of you. My patient needs her rest, and you do too. It's nearing one in
the morning!"

"Bye, all," Jade said, leaning back against her pillow.

"We'll visit you first thing in the morning," Alana replied as she was shepherded out the door.
