Chapter 2

Alana, thought Jade, was exhausting.

She had been chasing the enthusiastic first-year around for three hours now, and Alana had only gotten faster as the day dragged on. Jade finally stopped her to suggest that they go and seek some lunch.

"Let's take the invisible staircase!" Alana whooped, dashing towards an angled gap between first floor and second. She placed one foot on the gap- and fell straight down. Jade screamed as she watched the shock of red hair pinwheeling as it neared the ground. Without thinking (for that is how some of the best decisions are made), she reached for her own wand and flicked it.

"Windgardium leviosa!"

There was a small yelp from Alana, who was suddenly hovering by the back of her robes, feet brushing the hard floor of the chambers below. Jade raised her wand up slowly and maneuvered the flailing girl up over the ledge and back to the floor. She broke the hold and Alana flopped to the marble floor. Jade raced over to her, nibbling on her fingernails. Imagine if she had accidentally killed a first-year student on their first day? But Alana didn't look dead, just shaken. She was twitching slightly, and she was pale and sweaty. As Jade knelt over her, Alana spoke.

"You-you...you saved me," she said, gazing up at Jade with an unfamiliar reverence.

"Of course I did." Jade settled to the ground, tying a bow around her ponytail. "I wouldn't just let you fall, now would I?"

"Still. I would have buckled under the pressure. I can't thank you enough."

Professor Quilmane, the Charms teacher, walked over to the girls. "Why aren't you in class, ladies?"

Jade started to stammer something, but Alana spoke up. "I fell on the invisible staircase, and I was going to die, but Jade saved me with some MAGIC!" She grinned brightly at Professor Quilmane, and Jade bit back a laugh.

"Excellent usage of magic, Miss Pevensie. Twenty points to Grizzleheart. Now run along to lessons, both of you." The professor stalked away, her boots kicking up the back of her long robes.

"I have Herbology, but I think your class is in the Charms wing. Just follow the floating arrows, and you'll get there." Alana bounded off, eyes shining and robes flying. Jade paced off in the opposite direction, to the greenhouse on the back lawn.
