Chapter 13

Jade stared at the sheet in horror. Not a single word was there, not even a dot. Feverishly, she skimmed the pages. Nothing, nothing, nothing! Abigail looked even paler than usual, and Alana looked so angry Jade feared for her safety.

"They're empty?! How can they be empty?" Jade yelped, scattering the papers as she leaped to her feet. She began to pace, her furious footfalls softened by the emerald carpet on the common room floor. "We have worked so hard to try and find these. We need answers! We need them to save West before it's too late!" With this, she burst into tears and hid her face in her sleeve. She wasn't crying from sadness, however, these tears were the hot, unstoppable kind that come with furious anger.

Alana joined her on the carpet, storming back and forth with her friend. "Jade, calm down. Crying won't help us solve the problem."

"What is there to do?" Jade sounded utterly hopeless, her voice both small and icy. Her face was streaked with tears and there was a wet spot on her robe sleeve. "We've tried everything, but I guess we just can't save her."

"Wait." Abigail's voice, coming loud and clear from the air next to them, startled Jade into silence. "Just because nothing's there doesn't mean nothing's there."

The girls stared at her, confused. "What do you mean?" Alana asked.

"Well, have you ever considered that Elissa made the words invisible? Perhaps she did not want anyone to find them who was not wholly determined to find answers."

Jade looked Abigail in the eye for a few seconds, before shrugging and lifting her wand. "Specialus revealio!"

At first, there was no noticeable effect to the pages. But slowly, a flush of darkness passed over each page. The darkness swelled and focused on shapes, the shapes of letters. Each letter was hit with a comet of dark dust, and words began to form on the parchment. Before their very eyes, entire journal entries appeared, and Jade began to read from the page.

"'The headmaster announced that the school has been terrorized by a Lagomorph. Not sure what one is, I will have to do some research. He said that protecting the school is the most important thing on his mind, and that the creature won't breach our defenses again.' Do any of you guys know what a Lagomorph is?"

Alana spoke. "I read a book on morphic creatures once. There was a whole chapter about Lagomorphs. It said that they took the form of rabbits, but could become humans for a short period of time. They are often vicious creatures, as a Lagomorph can take a human's spirit to become fully human themselves. They are unassuming in their natural form, but are dangerous if crossed. At least, I think that's what I read."

Jade blanched. "Take a spirit? Dangerous if crossed? I am in way over my head." She took a deep breath and lifted her head. "But I can do this. We can all do this." She laid her hand out, palm down. "For West."

Alana placed her hand on top of Jade's. Abigail added hers to the stack, but it was so light it felt like a brush of fabric instead.

"For West," they said together.
