Chapter 1

Jade stood nervously in a corner of the Great Hall, her green diamond-patterned hood covering her hair and shading her face. Today was the day when twenty new students, all first-years, would join the ranks of Eaglesclaw. She always despised this day. She would have to help show around a new Grizzleheart student, because she had volunteered as a Professor's Aide without thinking of the consequences.

Someone bumped into her shoulder, and she jumped. When she shifted position, her hood swung down off of her head, and she flinched involuntarily. When she looked up, she saw a familiar pair of denim blue eyes smiling down at her. The eyes belonged to Jack Foster, a Merdock boy who she had been crushing on practically since first year. He reached out and carefully brushed a stray curl out of her face.

"Keep your hood off," he said, smiling at her softly. Then he turned on his heel and walked away, ready to help some new Merdock student learn the workings of the castle.

Jade stared after him, speechless and blushing. She always kept her hood up because she was too shy to talk to anyone. What she did not know, however, was how beautiful the girl behind the thick robes and heavy hood really was. Jade possessed long, tight curly hair the color of a chocolate bar, which she usually tucked back with a band or magic. Her eyes were a sparkling green, and she had a gorgeous smile. Her skin was tan and smooth. She was gorgeous, although she did not know it.

"Are you Jade Pevensie?" A small, nervous-looking girl with a shock of red hair and Grizzleheart robes was standing in front of her, gripping her wand like it was one of those odd Muggle devices which helps one to float on the water.

"Yes," Jade said, equally nervous. "Hello."

The girl looked a little less shaken, and smiled brightly. "I'm Alana. It's nice to meet you!"

Jade straightened, the girl's cheerful attitude calming her down. "Nice to meet you, too. I'm going to show you around the castle and help you get adjusted today."

Alana stood up tall and beamed, giving a big thumbs-up and tucking her wand into her robes pocket. "Let's go!" she cheered, and raced off down the corridor, Jade nervously following after.
