Chapter 14

After allowing Madame Pomfrey to clean and treat her burns, Jade went out to the judge's table to wait for her scores. Alana, West, and Draco came to wait with her.

"That was so epic!" Alana bounced up and down, a Grizzleheart scarf wrapped around her head and a Hufflepuff one slung around her shoulders. She had meshed with their roommate Mallory with ease, and the two were rarely seen apart. The two were both loud, giggly, and most likely certifiably insane, but lovable nonetheless. "That part when you got lit on fire? AWESOME!"

West bonked their friend on the side of the head. "I thought it was neat how you tamed the dragon. Did it have a name?" Her boots were covered in dirt and leaves, and there was a twig stuck in her usually neat hair.

"Her name," Jade said, laughing and checking her hair for singed clumps, "is Xīnghóng. It's Chinese, it means scarlet."

"Why Chinese?" Draco furrowed his brow. "And why Scarlet?"

"She's a Chinese Fireball, and she's red in color. It didn't take much creativity."

"Jade, they're giving you your marks," Alana prodded her and pointed to the judge's dais.

Mister Crouch, the Ministry representative, raised his wand. A silvery ribbon flowed out, forming the shape of an elegant number seven.

"That's more than he gave that stuck-up Fleur girl!" West clapped. Her face was bright, and she looked giggly. "The dragon liked the name you gave her, by the way."

Jade frowned, confused by West's certainty, but then shrugged and turned back to the judges.

Ludo Bagman was next. His ribbon made a ten. Jade's heart fluttered. Seventeen points already!

Then, Madame Maxime, the hulking headmistress from Beauxbatons raised her wand.

"Four?" Alana roared in outrage. "Four lousy little points? She gave Fleur ten!" She stomped her foot.

Jade patted her friend's shoulder absentmindedly. "Look, Headmaster Thornbeck is going!"

Their familiar headmaster shot a nine up.

"That's thirty points! Thirty!" Alana and West were dancing with excitement, and Draco looked vaguely excited. He gave her hand a squeeze and let her look as Dumbledore, the final decider, lifted his strange wand and fired a beautiful, infinite eight.

Thirty eight points. She had tamed a dragon and come away with thirty eight points. Her heart swelled with relief. She may not have won the task, but she had completed it successfully.
