Acromantulas: You Know You Hate Them
Chapter 3
We've all heard of acromantulas, right? Giant, ugly, hairy spiders? Yup. Definitely something you wouldn't want to run into in the dark. Believed to be wizard-bred, they were first created before the Ban on Experimental Breeding in 1965, and, of course, they have a taste for human flesh. And just like little spiders, they're appearance is everything but appealing. They have eight large, black eyes(though they will turn white if the acromantula becomes blind), and are usually covered in thin black hair.Adults are the size of cart horses, and their leg span can reach up to fifteen feet. They have a large, sharp pair of chelicerae(pincers) that they use to eat their live prey, and even their dead kin. These pincers make a clicking sound when agitated or excited, and also secrete poison. Unlike other spiders, acromantulas are sentient beings, and are perfectly capable of human speech. The venom their pincers produce is a very pricy product, valued at one hundred Galleons a pint. Now that we've covered the acromantulas themselves, let's talk about their eggs. The females who lay the eggs are generally larger than the males, and they can lay up to one hundred eggs at a time. These eggs are soft, white, beach ball sized objects that are very wide. They hatch in about six weeks to eight weeks. But don't get any ideas, because the acromantula eggs are a Class A Non Tradeable Material. In the wizarding world, a colony of acromantulas was established in the Forbidden Forest on the Hogwarts grounds. It was started by the acromantulas Aragog and his mate Mosag.
