Library & Mischief

Chapter 3

Their discussion continued as they followed their friends out of the Great Hall, filled with excitement, camaraderie, and a shared determination to bring glory to Gryffindor House. As they exchanged ideas and built upon each other’s strategies, Fred and George did not forget their new interest in Charlie and his friend. Their friends were focused on setting the stage for a thrilling and unforgettable Quidditch match, their hearts set on victory and their minds filled with anticipation, but the twins were hatching new ways to torment Charlie, conversing through twin telepathy.

“Lee, are the plays Wood drew up still in your room? I think we should go over them one more time.” Alicia asked as they all walked together down Hogwart corridors.

“I think so. Fred, George, you guys are coming right?” Lee looked between his two dorm-mates.

“Erm, yeah.” They both said at the same time, their minds distantly away from thoughts of Quidditch. They were collaborating and and immediately waiting for their opportunity for some lighthearted prankery. With mischievous grins, they began plotting their scheme, eager to catch Charlie off guard and inject some fun into his studious evening.

As they made their way towards the library, the twins were met with protests from their friends, who were quite aware of their prankish tendencies and the potential disruption they could cause.

“Uh-oh, they have that look in their eyes,” Lee warned.

“Come on, guys, let’s not ruin Charlie’s study date.” Urged Angelina Johnson, her voice of reason. “He needs this time to focus, and we should respect that.”

Lee Jordan chimed in, his tone firm yet understanding. “We know how important Charlie’s studies are to him, and we should support him in any way we can. Let’s not distract him.”

Alicia Spinnet nodded in agreement. “Remember, we’re a team, both on and off the Quidditch pitch. We need to respect each other’s commitments.”

Fred and George exchanged glances, momentarily subdued by the genuine concern of their friends. They realized that their mischievous intentions could potentially undermine their brother’s efforts and hinder his academic progress.

Reluctantly, Fred shrugged and smiled sheepishly. “Alright, alright, you win. We’ll leave Charlie to his studies this time. But mark my words, we’ll find another opportunity soon!”

Their friends breathed a collective sigh of relief, grateful that their reasoning had prevailed. With a newfound understanding, the group redirected their attention to their own activities, leaving Charlie undisturbed in the library to focus on his studies.

As the twins and their friends dispersed, Fred and George couldn’t help but drift their minds back to the mysterious piece of parchment and the secrets it could potentially hold. Curiosity burned within them, and they couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something more to the parchment than met the eye.

With a mischievous glint in their eyes, Fred and George exchanged a knowing glance. “We can’t let this opportunity slip through our fingers, George,” Fred whispered, his voice filled with excitement.

George nodded his own excitement mirrored in his eyes. “Absolutely, Fred. We need to find out what this parchment is capable of.”

Their minds brimming with anticipation, the twins knew exactly where to delve deeper into unlocking the mysterious parchment they had discovered in Filch’s office. Despite their initial promises, Fred and George found themselves unable to resist the temptation and allure of the library. It was the perfect place to study, they justified. They could and absolutely would leave Charlie alone on his study date.

Sneakily, they made their way through the library, trying their best to keep their footsteps light and their laughter stifled, they couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt. But what Lee, Alicia, and Angelina didn’t know, wouldn’t hurt them. Scanning the room for any sign of their brother, so they could avoid him, brought them to the best advantage point. They had the best view, while simultaneously well hidden and out of the way.

They knew they should walk away and find a different spot but the allure of mischief was too strong to resist. Their minds filled with curiosity of what Charlie could actually be doing, they figured it was best just to see for themselves before their overactive imaginations took over completely.

They found him in a secluded corner, Charlie engrossed in his studies, completely unaware of their presence. Stacks of books surrounding him and this Gisella Featherbridge, collectively they had no less than five books open before them. Both their quills scribbling furiously and working in tandem. Neither seemed to really notice the other’s presence. If Fred and George didn’t know already that Charlie was there with her, they would have just thought the pair were sharing a desk and studying separately.

Fred and George knew they had promised their friends that they would leave Charlie undisturbed, but their mischievous instincts urged them to have a little light-hearted fun at their older brother’s expense. Fred turned to George, his eyes gleaming with excitement, “Aright George, let’s make this quick and discreet. We don’t want to ruin Charlie’s study date entirely. Just a little harmless fun.” and together they snuck a little bit closer hidden behind the large wooden bookcases.

Their mischievous grins faded into stunned expressions of awe. They found themselves momentarily captivated by the sheer beauty of Charlie’s companion, the witch’s appearance took their breath away. At a closer glance Fred and George couldn’t help but gaze at Gisella and her striking features. They were mesmerized by her beauty, her large almond-shaped brown eyes drew the twins in like magnets.

Fred nudged George, unable to contain his admiration, “Forge, do you see her eyes? They’re like chocolate orbs, so full of warmth and depth. I could get lost in them.”

George nodded, a smile playing on his lips, “Absolutely, Gred. They’re like windows to her soul, revealing a world of beauty and intrigue. No wonder Charlie’s so eager to study.”

Despite their mischievous nature and penchant for pranks, Fred and George couldn’t deny the power of a simple glance from her enchanting brown eyes. It left an indelible mark on their hearts, stirring a mix of admiration towards their usually dragon-obsessed brother, overall curiosity and a longing to know more about the enchanting witch whose gaze had captured their attention.

Fred and George exchanged wide-eyed glances, their usually quick-witted banter momentarily forgotten. They couldn’t help but be drawn to her magnetic presence, unable to tear their gaze away. George nudged Fred discreetly, his voice barely a whisper, “Fred, have you ever seen anyone so…so captivating?”

Fred nodded, his words barely a breath, “Absolutely, George. She’s like a spell we can’t break free from. There’s something about her that’s simply extraordinary.”

As they observed her from a distance, Fred and George’s admiration was mixed with a touch of apprehension. They had built a reputation as mischievous pranksters, and they worried that their playful antics might not be enough to capture the attention of someone as remarkable as her.

Realizing their staring had become a bit much, George forced himself to tear his eyes away from the captivating witch. He looked to his twin and saw Fred staring with his mouth open, “Fred. Fred. Fred.” he whisper-yelled, giving him a playful nudge “you’re drooling.”

Fred shook himself out of the trance, quickly regaining his composure and returning his focus back to their conversation, “What?”

“You have drool coming out of your mouth.”

Fred reached to wipe his mouth and to his disbelief George was right, he had been drooling. He turned a shade of red with embarrassment. They couldn’t let their infatuation distract them from their mission any longer. Well maybe one quick harmless prank while they were right there. Turning to George, his eyes glinting with excitement, “Alright, George, let’s make this quick and discreet. We don’t want to ruin Charlie’s study date entirely. Just a little harmless fun.”

George nodded, understanding the delicate balance they needed to achieve, “Agreed, Fred. Let’s go for something subtle, something that will make him chuckle without completely distracting him.”

With their wands at the ready, the twins carefully casted a silent spell on the essay Charlie was working on causing the words he had written on the page to rearrange themselves into an amusing picture of a dragon sipping a teacup with its pinky raised, an amusing message that only Charlie would find humorous.

Satisfied with their little prank, the twins exchanged mischievous grins before trying to sneak away before they were caught. But to their horror Gisella picked that precise moment to stop her own scribbling and say to Charlie, “Alright, you almost finished? Let’s compare our essays, shall we?” sharing an enchanting grin.

The twins' hearts dropped when they watched Charlie switch parchments with his study partner without even glancing at his own paper one last time. They held their breaths as they watched Gisella’s face. Her enchanting smile slowly turned to confusion, her beautiful brows furrowed, and her hand covering her mouth in shock.

Uh-oh they really had done it now. Charlie would be furious if they ruined his study date with the beautiful enchanting witch.

Gisella started to giggle, a smile had formed behind her hidden hand, “Oh Charles, I think your little brothers have found us.”

Charlie looked up from the essay Gisella had handed him, “huh?” He had his serious study face on.

She handed him his own essay back, trying to hold back giggles. Charlie took it with confusion plastered on his face which quickly turned to anger when saw what was charmed on his parchment. His shoulders tensed and his brows furrowed. Charlie scanned the library in search of his mischievous prankster little brothers.

They were caught now and in serious trouble. Bashfully and dawning their most debonair smiles Fred and George came out of their hiding spot. Charlie was fuming mad, they could practically see the smoke coming out of his ears. Face to face with an unamused Charlie his expression a mixture of annoyance and disappointment.

“Hello charming Charlie,” Fred tested the waters. Charlie just glared.

“Getting a lot of studying done, I see. Well we should leave you two to it.” guilt filled George’s voice.

Fred and George exchanged sheepish glances, their mischievous spirit dampened by Charlie’s stern presence. They tried to sneak away but were caught by Charlie who had left his studying spot quickly and quietly, like the true seeker he is, and grabbed them by their shoulders.

Fred scratched the back of his head, attempting to conjure up an innocent smile, “Ah, Charlie, you know us. We just can’t resist a good prank. It’s in our blood.”

George just nodded in agreement, his gaze fixed on the ground, “We didn’t mean any harm, really. Just a bit of fun, you know.”

“What in Merlin’s name do you two think you’re doing?” Charlie exclaimed, his voice filled with exasperation. “I can’t believe you would sneak up on me while I’m studying with–” he stopped himself short and seemed to really carefully think of the right word to use, “-with my study partner.”

“We..we didn’t mean to interrupt your studying, Charlie,” Fred stammered, his usual confidence wavering. “We just couldn’t help ourselves and—”

George chimed in, his voice filled with remorse, “Yeah Charlie, we’re really sorry. It was really thoughtless of us to interrupt your very important studying.”

Charlie’s stern expression conveyed his disappointment and frustration, and his silence stretched on, making the atmosphere heavy with tension.

“I can’t believe you two,” Charlie finally spoke, his voice laced with annoyance. “You’ve always been the kings of mischief, but I trusted you to respect my boundaries, and you shattered that trust.”

Fred and George exchanged remorseful glances,in their pursuit of amusement, they broke their brothers trust.

Charlie continued, his voice tinged with a touch of sadness, “I thought you understood the importance of family and supporting each other. But this prank….it felt like a betrayal. It’s going to take more than a simple apollo–”

“Oh Charlie, let them off the hook already.” giggled the beautiful Gisella, she got up from her chair and walked around to be closer to the Weasley boys. “Fred, George, it was a really cute dragon you conjured up. Charlie brought it to my attention that you two are quite the pranksters.” Gisella perched herself to sit on top of the study desk.

Fred and George just nodded their heads, they were stunned silent by her beauty.

“Oh, I guess I should remove the glamor,” she gasped, waving her wands and casting a silent incantation. Periwinkle sparks twinkled out of her wand, it sparkled like confetti and glitter. Fred and George’s head started to swim momentarily, it was the telltale sign of a glamor being removed. Rubbing their eyes to gain clear perspective, they felt the last of the magical effect draining away. They looked at Gisella and noticed right away she was a beautiful witch, but their previous admiration was gone.

“Sorry about that,” she stopped and giggled sheepishly, “Like I said, Charlie mentioned how you two have quite the knack for pranks, and it just so happens I do too.” Gisella shot the Weasley boys a coy smile, “Charlie had a feeling you two would follow us, so we hatched this plan. I told him that it takes a true master, dedicated to the pranking arts, to break through my glamor.”

Fred and George just stood there stunned, and not because of her beauty for once. Yes, she was a very nice witch to look at, and definitely too good looking for Charlie, but they couldn’t wrap their minds around what was happening.

“It’s one of Gisella’s family’s ancient family spells. It creates this wall of beauty around the caster to make anyone truly believe the caster is the most beautiful thing they ever saw and to instantly fall in love.” Charlie stopped to beam at Gisella, “She's incredible, isn’t she?”

“Wait,” George stood there in disbelief, “you’re not really mad?”

“Wait,” Fred held his hands up in disbelief, “you don’t find her breathtakingly gorgeous? - Well I mean when the glamor was put up - I mean,” Fred stumbled over his words.

Charlie and Gisella chuckled at him as Fred turned beet red, “Well of course I notice her beauty, stupid. But I guess the glamor doesn’t affect me as much as you peabrained dimwits. I enjoy Gisella, for her personality. She’s a great friend and even better study partner. Now fix my paper before I ban you both from the team.”

George waved his wand and casted a silent spell removing the enchantment, the previous dragon sipping tea finally dissolved away letter by letter as it rearranged itself to the correct placement.

“So, you’re not really mad?” George asked again, it was hard to believe that was all for show, Charlie was so convincing.

“Nah. I know my brothers, if there’s mischief to be had, you two aren’t far behind. If not the ring leaders. And I saw the looks on your faces. There was no way you weren’t going to come here to disturb us.” Charlie chuckled to himself.

“Well for your information Charlie, we didn’t come to the library for you. We have a very important business to study.” Fred crossed his arms.

“Oh yeah? Like what?” Charlie challenged them.

“Not that it's any of your business but we –”

George jumped in quickly, “we are behind on our homework and need to study the effects of invisibility ink.” lying felt almost wrong, but he didn’t want Fred giving away too much information on the mysterious piece of parchment.

“Oh grab the books you boys need and come join us!” Gisella exclaimed.

This gesture took the twins by surprise, and they waited for Charlie to object, they didn’t want to intrude anymore than they already did on his study date. When Charlie didn’t object George spoke up, “That’s very kind of you to offer Gisella but we don’t want to interrupt your study plans.”

“Yes, very kind Gisella, but we should really leave you two to study alone.” Fred said, backing up his twin. Feeling even more guilty for disrupting their study date.

Charlie chuckled to himself, a gesture anyone could miss, but the twins caught it, “If you two are planning to study, and we are already studying, then what’s the issue? Fred? George?”

Fred and George quickly realized that Charlie didn’t believe them, and they couldn’t let Charlie think they came all the way to the library just to disturb his evening. Seeing no other way out of it they hesitantly agreed.

“Great! Go grab what books you need and meet us back over here.” Gisella beamed.
