The Even More Unexpected Question
Chapter 3
Today was the day. It was the day of the Hogsmeade visit. I wasn't originally planning on going because none of my friends were, but Scott had asked me to go with him. I remember that late night in the common room when we were all alone.
I woke up that morning and immediately got out of bed. I woke up Allison and we went down to breakfast together. I rambled on to Allison about what could possibly go wrong today. I was excited, but nervous at the same time. I felt like this a lot. As I was talking to Allison, I looked down the Gryffindor table and spotted Scott talking to a few of his friends. He caught my eye and smiled back at me. To my surprise, I managed to smile back at him before Allison talked to me.
"So you guys are just going to spend the whole visit together? Alone?", she asked me.
"Yeah, I guess so. He didn't say he was bringing anyone else." It made me nervous that I would be spending the entire day with him with no one else to help me if things got bad.
People had started to leave the Great Hall and go out to the grounds to leave for Hogsmeade. Scott stood up and left his friends at the table. He walked up to me and said, "Ready to go, Danielle?"
"Just about," I said as I too got out of my seat, "Bye Allison!". Allison smiled and waved to me to as I left the Great Hall with Scott.
We walked into the line where Filch was checking to see if we were aloud to go into Hogsmeade. I felt awkward standing next to Scott in line. Everyone else that weren't with friends were with their boyfriends or girlfriends. And they were holding hands. If Scott made a move like that, i would surely panic.
After we got into the wonderful village of Hogsmeade, we started to walk along the busy road. It was just before Christmas, so the street was snowy and we had to wear multiple layers of clothing to keep warm.
"So where do you want to go first?", Scott asked me.
"How about the Three Broomsticks?" I wanted to be somewhere crowded to avoid any awkward silences.
"Good call, it'll be warm in there.", he said.
We walked into the busy pub and found a small table in the corner. As soon as we sat down, Madame Rosmerta came up to our table and said, "Hey Danielle. Hey Scott. What can I get for you guys today?" Most people at Hogwarts were very close to Madame Rosmerta, as we came to her pub every Hogsmeade visit.
"We'll have two butterbeers," Scott said for the both of us.
"Be right back with that then", she said as she walked away.
After a few seconds of pause, Scott said "So I just wanted to thank you for coming here with me today."
"It's no problem, really," I said trying to keep calm.
"Listen there's something I wanted to ask you," he said to me, looking slightly nervous.
"What is it?" I asked him. I was pretty curious to find out what he wanted.
"I was just wondering if yo--", he started, but was cut off by his obnoxious friend, Jake.
"Hey Scott! What are you doing here all alone?", Jake said as he pulled up a chair at our table.
"Um hey Jake. I'm not alone, this is Danielle Lahey. I asked her to come here with me", Scott said slightly embarrassed.
"Hi", I said sheepishly.
"Uh hey...Danielle, right?", he said as if noticing me for the first time.
"Yeah, and you're Jake Rosati?" I asked him, even though I knew perfectly well who he was. He and Scott were probably one of the most popular boys in our year.
"Mhmm," he said not even looking at me anymore. Suddenly, his eyes widened and he looked at Scott. "Oh! Is this the girl that you...", Jake asked Scott.
"Yes, it is. You should leave now." Scott looked at Jake with a look of warning in his eyes.
"Yeah, I probably should." Jake said as he got up and left with a smirk on his face.
"What was that all about?" I asked Scott after Jake was out of earshot.
"Nothing, don't worry about it." he told me. But as much as I wanted to believe him, I knew something wasn't right. But I shook away the feeling. I was just being paranoid.
At that moment, Madame Rosmerta came back with our butterbeers. "Here you go, darlings." She said as she put them down on the table. As she was leaving, I saw Scott pay her.
"You didn't need to do that. I could have paid for myself." I told him, embarrassed.
"Nope, my treat." he said with a smile in his face. The smile. It was still my greatest weakness.
"So what were you trying to tell me earlier before Jake interrupted?", I asked Scott suddenly remembering.
"Oh yeah, that," he said, as he looked down at the table. "I know we haven't known each other for that long, but I wanted to tell you that I really like you. I know I already told you that, but I really do. You're really cool. You might not know it and I know you're insecure about yourself but I've never felt this way about someone before. I know I probably sound like I'm rushing things right now, but I was wondering if you wanted to be my girlfriend...?", he asked me as he looked up into my eyes.
Okay, this definitely was not real. Scott McCall had just asked me to be his girlfriend. He was right, he was rushing into this. I've never had a boyfriend before and I didn't know how this really worked. Allison has had lots of boyfriends, I'll just ask her what she thinks, I thought. No, no, I'm not going to say yes. This is too weird, I'll just let him down gently.
"Yes, of course I would want to be your girlfriend." Why did I just say that, I thought. Oh well, there was no going back now and I really wanted this to happen, so I might as well go with it.
"Really?" Scott asked as his eyes lit up, "Thanks a lot, really, thanks. I'm not good at this stuff and I didn't know how to ask you..."
"It's alright. I'm not good at this either. Maybe we should just see what happens," I told him.
Scott sighed. "That was a lot easier than I thought it would be," he said as he leaned in closer to me. He pulled my hair away from my face gently and whispered, "You know Danielle, you're actually really pretty." I blushed and he must have noticed because he smiled. Oh no, he's smiling, I thought. He leaned in closer to me and I saw that his brown eyes were light enough so that I could easily see what he was feeling through them.
"Thanks," I said, but Scott then put his hand on my cheek and said, "Shhh..."
He leaned in closer and before I could say anything else, he was kissing me. He was so gentle, I wished it would last forever. By the time I realized was actually happening, it was over. He leaned back and I realized that I just had my first kiss.
"Wow," I said. That sounded like an understatement for what had just happened.
"Wow," he agreed.
We left the Three Broomsticks, me still in a state of shock. As we were walking towards the grounds again, Scott grabbed my hand and intertwined his fingers with mine. I jumped up a little in surprise at this. "Shh...it's okay, you don't have to be nervous with me." Scott said as he smiled at me. Suddenly, I didn't feel so nervous around him. He felt like a friend, someone I could actually talk to. I smiled back at him and kept walking while holding his hand. Absolutely nothing could go wrong.
After all, I was Scott McCall's girlfriend.
