Chloe was busy scrubbing a particularly obstinate trophy when she caught her reflection in the mirror. She looked like a mess. Her hair was coming out of its ponytails, her eyes were bloodshot, and there was a spattering of dried blood on the white sleeve of her jacket. Her skirt was crumpled, her brand-new boots were already scuffed, and there were shiny patches on her cheeks.

After Professor McGonnagal had awarded her detention, she had run out of the compartment to the train bathroom and cried. Eventually, the snack cart witch had come to investigate the disturbance and discovered her. Too upset to even cover for herself, she had just kind of sat on the floor looking sad. The snack witch had taken pity on her, given her a few chocolate frogs and a hot pumpkin juice, and left her to it. She hadn't mentioned the fact that she preferred licorice wands.

Now, as she rubbed James Potter's Quidditch trophy, she got an idea. She could keep being a kick-butt person, but she could be super-sweet on the outside. She was determined to stay innocent. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck, right?
