The Last Straw - Chapter One
Chapter 1
I sat comfortably at my cauldron chatting away to Fred and George, my two best friends here at Hogwarts among others. The dungeons were cold, as usual, and kids were filing in fearfully and unhappily. Fortunately, the greasy git wasn't present at the moment so I decided to let loose before dealing with his high strung, biased, and rude persona. Precisely 5 minutes after class was supposed to start, the doors slammed open and in came the drama queen himself. I rolled my eyes and leaned back in my chair, turning from Fred and George. Snape strode gracefully up to his desk and began to preach with a boring drawl.
"Today we will be attempting to brew a simple Draught of Peace." His gaze turned to one of sheer annoyance and hatred as he shifted his eyes to me, very unsubtle I might add. I narrowed my eyes right back at him and his lip curled in disgust before he looked away to some other poor Gryffindor. "Hopefully you dunderheads don't manage to blow up my classroom." He arched an eyebrow at a very pale boy sitting in the front row. The boy looked like he could vomit from just being in his mere presence. I scoffed out loud. I know the feeling. I thought silently to myself. Apparently I scoffed a little too loud, for Snape whipped his head toward me with a raised eyebrow and nasty sneer. "Something you'd like to share, Ms. Bennett?"
I sat up straight and shook my head with a calm face. "No, sir." He smirked which managed to ruffle my feathers. "Do you?" I asked tilting my head in mock consideration. He snarled at me and it was my turn to smirk. The twins tried stifling their laughter but Snape heard them and shot them a cold look shutting them up instantly. I crossed my arms over my chest and leaned back in my chair still smirking at his irritated expression. He returned his stare to me.
"10 points from Gryffindor." My smile fell and I looked at him in disbelief instantly going into defense mode.
"What?!" I shot up in my seat leaning forward as his lips turned up into a smug smile once more. This only fueled my hate fire. "For being considerate?" I questioned highly harshly and annoyed. His eyes narrowed and he strolled towards my seat but I managed to stay still and not show any hesitation. He was intimidating, even to a pure Gryffindor like me. When he reached my desk he slammed his hands down making everyone jump, but not near as high as me. I could tell I had really made him angry when he showed no amusement or acknowledgement of my frightened reaction. His coal black eyes leered into my playful hazel ones and it took everything I had not to squirm.
"For being sarcastic. And another 10 points for interrupting my class and being disrespectful. Care to add on, Ms. Bennett?" He drawled with fury not once taking his eyes off mine. My heart pounded in my throat as I gaped at him, his face was about 2 inches from mine and I felt extremely uncomfortable.
"I uh.." He cocked an eyebrow expectantly and I licked my lips.
"Well?" He drug out the word. When I didn't reply, he pushed himself away and stared down his hooked nose at me. "As expected you can't throw punches when they're thrown back." He pivoted on his heel and walked to the board. I was now, officially, pissed. I clenched my fists and stared bullets into the back of his head.
"You'd know all about being sarcastic and disrespectful. Wouldn't you, Professor?" The class gasped and he instantly stilled, the muscles in his back and shoulders tensing. I faltered for a moment before I was reminded of his rude and unnecessary behavior, in which I managed to place a scowl on my face once more. He whipped around, hands clenched into fists and angrily stomped towards me. My heart leaped in my chest as he approached and I scooted back anxiously in my seat.
"DETENTION!" He roared with venom evident in his tone. "Not another word or else, Ms. Bennett!" He yelled still thoroughly enraged. I nodded my head shocked and... dare I say it? Yes, I dare. Shocked and afraid. I didn't say another word for the rest of that class. When the bell rang, dismissing us, I gathered my stuff and rushed out of the horrid Potion classroom. Fred and George quickly caught up grinning madly.
"What a git!" I yelled mad. They grinned. "I hate him so much." This is when I noticed the twinkle in their eyes. I tilted my head in hesitant curiousity. "Whaattt...?" With once glance at each other, they pulled out a piece of parchment and shoved into my hands before scurrying away. I looked after them confused before looking down and opening up the folded parchment. My eyes lit up like Christmas once I read the fine print.
"101 [Sure-fire] Ways to trick the ol' bat, aka Professor Snape"
I grinned evilly before speaking softly to myself. "This is going to be fun."
