The first years followed Professor McGonagall through some
large wooden doors and were led into a grand room that had four long tables
pointing to one more table facing them. Each of the tables was for a house and
the one at the front was for the teachers. The ceiling was seemingly none existent
and looked just like the night sky outside and there were hundreds of candles
glinting hanging from nowhere. Carrie heard a boy behind say that the ceiling
was bewitched to look like the sky outside and she wondered if she would ever be
able to cast a spell that amazing. They were finally at the front of the room
when a small stool with a grubby looking hat on top of it. The room went silent
as a tall, elderly man made his way up to a podium with a large golden owl on
the front of it. This man was Albus Dumbledore and he was the head teacher at
Hogwarts.

“Welcome everyone to a new year here at Hogwarts. Before our
feast begins we need to sort our first years into their houses and I trust that
you will welcome them with upmost enthusiasm and help them to settle in here at
Hogwarts. The houses are Hufflepuff, Slytherin, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. Now I
will pass the ceremony over to Professor McGonagall.” When he finished speaking
Professor Dumbledore passed a scroll to McGonagall and took his seat in the
centre of the table.

“When I call your name step up to the stool, take a seat and
place the hat on your head. First, Albern Miranda.”

A small girl with brown hair stepped up and sat tensely on
the stool, after a few seconds the hat opened its mouth and said “Hmm,
Hufflepuff”. The girl smiled and walked up to the cheering table where the rest
of Hufflepuff sat. After a few more names were called Professor McGonagall said
“Ruthen Bon”. Bon carefully sat on the stool and placed the sorting hat on her
head. It took the hat just two seconds before shouting “Ravenclaw”. Bon
shuffled off down to the table and glanced back at her friends with a smile.
More names were called, “ Nelsonio Georgiana” “Ravenclaw”. Then finally it was
Carrie, “Newdan Carrie” Carrie quickly walked up to the stool and sat down. As
she placed the hat on her head she didn’t know what to expect and hoped there
wasn’t something she had to do to get it to work but surely enough a few
seconds after she did so the hat said “I know just where to put you… Ravenclaw!”.
Carrie happily joined Bon and G at the Ravenclaw table and later Sam joined
them also.

They enjoyed the feast and listened carefully to Dumbledore’s
notices for the year. After they finished in the hall they were led to the
Ravenclaw dormitories and as soon as they got to their room the girls put on
their pyjamas and went to bed. Carrie lay there in her four poster bed and fell
asleep thinking of the incredible year ahead.
