LESSON ONE:

Astronomy is the study of the universe.

Muggles believe it to be a natural science.
Earth is within the Milky way galaxy.
Eight planets, all orbiting the Sun in a Elliptical rotation and counterclockwise motion.
The sun obits the galactic centre.

Inner solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. Outer Solar System: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.

Asteroid belt is between Mars & Jupiter.

Stars are balls of hydrogen & helium. They maintain a nuclear fusion in their core.

Stars play important role in religion and navigation.

North star always points you north.

Pattern of stars are constellations.

1929- the international astronomical union recognized 88 constellations. These are the only official constellations to this day.

Big dipper is considered a asterism and is in the constellation "ursa major".

Twelve of constellations make up zodiac because of their location above the equator.
