Astronomy: Lesson 1

Chapter 1

  • Astronomy is the study of our universe
  • Includes celestial objects, phenomena that originate in space, and the physics, chemistry and evolution
    • Phenomena includes: supernova explosions, gamma ray bursts, cosmic radiation, etc
    • Celestial objects include: planets, stars, moons, nebulae, galaxies, etc.
  • Muggles consider astronomy to be a natural science
  • Earth is located within the Milky Way galaxy
  • The Milky Way is comprised of eight planets, all of which orbit the Sun
  • Orbit means that planets travel around the Sun in an elliptical rotation
  • All of the planets move in a counter-clockwise direction, but they each go at their own place
  • The Sun orbits the galactic center
  • There are 2 parts to our Solar System; the Inner Solar System and the Outer Solar System
  • The Inner Solar System includes Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
  • The Outer Solar System includes Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
  • Asteroid Belt is located between Mars and Jupiter
    • Made up of over 7,000 asteroids
    • Orbits the Sun, and contains asteroids of various shapes and sizes
  • In the Milky Way galaxy, there are billions of stars
  • A star is a ball of hydrogen and helium that has enough mass to maintain nuclear fusion at its core
  • Nuclear fusion that makes the star luminous in our night sky
  • Stars have played a large role in religion and navigation
    • North Star always points you north
  • In 1929, the International Astronomical Union officially recognized 88 constellations
  • Big Dipper is not an official constellation because the Big Dipper is found within the constellation of Ursa Major
  • Twelve constellations were picked out from all the other constellations to make up the Zodiac
    • Aries, Aquarius, Cancer, Capricorn, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Pisces, Sagittarius, Scorpio (Scorpius), Taurus, and Virgo
  • Study of Zodiac in relation to determining one’s fortune or characteristic is astrology or astromancy
